biographical info
An informal openlng slot at the once great Southhill Candy Shop in the spring of '98 saw the introduction of flophouse jr to the Vancouver music scene. Initially a vehicle for songwriter, Jon Wood, to vent some acoustic frustrations away from the more electric Palace Flophouse, it quickly became an obsession of sonic economy. With an edgy innocence, flophouse jr has a unique take on the alt-pop and country scene and captured it over the spring and summer of '99 on a 1/2 inch analog 4-track in the confines of an east Van apartment. The result of these sessions was their debut release, Woodland, a collection of moody tunes sparsely embellished by an array of junk shop instruments. The album, available exclusively through Scratch Distribution, has gathered critical praise locally and beyond and has also received airplay on CBC and college radio stations. Future plans include a follow-up cd and possible summer touring.
