biographical info

In becoming acquainted with Toronto, Ontario’s Five Blank Pages, one cannot help but think of the proverbial weekend cottage, indulging in long strolls by a lapping shore or drawing closer to loved ones by camp fire on cool Canadian nights.

The honesty and innocence of Five Blank Pages is conveyed through pop strains of delicate harmonies, bursts of crackling distortion and irresistible melodic hooks – yet it isn’t this that melts your heart as much as the bond this real-life family cultivates on stage. Formed in 2003 in Brampton, Ontario, Five Blank Pages consists of singer/songwriter Noyan Hilmi (vocals, guitars), then girlfriend (now wife), Pinar Ozyetis (vocals, keys), Noyan’s sister Chelen Hilmi, (drums, vocals) and friend of longstanding, Rajiv Thavanathan. Combining expressive melancholic chord structures with often buoyant and uplifting rhythms, Five Blank Pages conjure sketches of artists such as The Weakerthans, Pedro The Lion, Hayden, Death Cab For Cutie, and many East-Coast indie groups of the early 90’s, while recontextualizing this canon with their own originality and mark.

Their debut 6-song EP “Spaces to Occupy and Abandon” (distributed by Universal Music) has allowed the quartet to garner a sizeable following, playing showcases such as the Halifax Pop Explosion, CMW, NXNE, S.C.E.N.E. Fest, Brampton Indie Arts Fest and Over the Top Fest. The long-awaited full-length follow-up, “Last Blush”, is the sonic equivalent of an explosion of indie-pop styling and colour. This said, please don’t misconstrue this band as some calculating denizen of the commercial world of some latter day Partridge Family. This is a group in their earnest creating solemn heartfelt songs that capture the poignancy of Canadian independent lo-fi/hi-fi rock. Understood? Good. Now come warm yourself by the fire. - Ranbir Gundu, 2007

The FINAL Five Blank Pages show - Sat, May 23rd in Toronto - we need you to share this night with us!‏‏‏‏‏‏‏

posted by noyanhilmi

Dear friends, family, and those who have followed our musical adventures,

After seven years and hundreds of performances, it has come time to play our final show as Five Blank Pages. Since 2003, we’ve worked very hard and done so much. Our lives are now moving on to place other priorities ahead of the band. It was only a matter of time until the scales would tip, thereby putting Five Blank Pages behind us.

It would only feel right to signal the end of the band with a celebration of what we’ve accomplished, who we’ve had the pleasure of working with, and the music we’ve created. We want you to join us for the last Five Blank Pages show. We’ve worked hard to make it as special as possible and for everyone to be able to attend. The details are:

As you can see, the show is open to all ages, but will also be licensed for those who would like to drink. We did this so all of you under 19 can make it, as we have not been out in the suburbs for too long. It would mean lot to us if you came to us for this show!

The show will be part of Over The Top Fest (www.overthetopfest.com), which is run by our good friend, Eric Warner. This would mark the 4th time we’ve played in the festival since 2004. It’s a festival we’ve always supported- watching it grow from year to year has been amazing.

The band in its current and final form is myself, Pinar and Michael Reles on drums. Rajiv, who previously played bass with us for 2 years, will be helping us out on bass for the night (thanks, Jeeber!). Rob Shortill (from This Is Picture) who played bass with us for our most recent will also be helping out on a few new songs as well (Thanks, Rob!). We will have a few more familiar faces join us that night; my sister and our drummer for 5 years, Chelen Hilmi will be singing harmonies and also playing drums on a few songs (!). We will also have our friends Peyton Leung, Reg McLean, Marcius Extavour and Dave Kates join us on violin, cello, trumpet and trombone respectively. We also have a few other surprise guests helping us out. Opening for us will be Rajiv’s (fantastic) band, Oh No Forest Fires, and Boys Who Say No. We’re excited and honoured that both bands can join us for this show.

On top of all of this bittersweet hoopla, we will be releasing a new 4-song EP entitled “Young Glow for you that night. This mini-album will come in numbered limited edition packaging. Three of these songs were recorded in December 2008 as rough demos, for which we owe many thanks to our friend Rob Shortill for recording at his home. The recordings turned out much better than we had planned, so we thought you should hear them. The fourth track “Cardigan” was recorded during the Last Blush sessions by Jose Contreras. The song has not been released, until now. These are the last musical episodes to remember us by, so hopefully you’ll pick one of these CDs up. All of our previous releases and merchandise will be available on this night on a Pay What You Can basis. We’d rather you have the music and merch than have it collect dust in our closets! Can't make it to the show but still want Young Glow? Or do you want to hear it before anyone else? BUY "YOUNG GLOW" DIGITALLY HERE for only $3.96: http://citymouserecords.downloadcentric.net

We cannot thank you enough for all of your support over the last few years- it’s been a fun and interesting ride and we hope we can share this one last night with you.

Til May 23rd,

xo noyan & pinar
