flattstreet revels in its contradictions of sophistication, absurdity, energy and youth with an unprecedented maturity of musicianship. Composed of bass, drums, guitar, tenor sax, trumpet, keys and vocals, flattstreet has a distinctly free sound that draws upon their influences of jazz, funk, R&B, free and indie-rock music.
The members of flattstreet met through the Hamilton All Star Jazz Band (HASJB) and formed their own jazz combo in 2000. The dedication gained from performing with the HASJB and the incomparable experience of touring Europe to play at premiere international festivals such as Montreux (Switzerland), Viennes (France), and the Zeltmusikfest (ZMF) in Freiburg (Germany) has driven the members of flattstreet not only to become extraordinary young musicians, but dedicated, hard-working and amiable individuals.
Recently, flattstreet has thrust itself upon the independent rock music scene by playing venues in the area like the Underground (Hamilton), Vinyl (Guelph), Scherzo (Kingston), El Mocambo and the Horseshoe Tavern (Toronto). In the past year, flattstreet have had the honour of sharing the stage with great acts such as Wax Mannequin, Shuffle Demons, Trevor Dunn and the Pocket Dwellers.
flattstreet has performed a diversity of shows ranging from loud hardcore to experimental-free improvisation sessions to straight up jazz. Their repertoire consists of original tunes and is infused with remixes of other artists such as Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Buckley.
