Erin Propp is a singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba with a pure, soulful, distinctive voice. Her song-writing is thoughtful, informed, and emotionally frank. Whether singing with symphony orchestra, big band, or in an intimate club or living room setting, Erin is a welcome artist, with refined musical style and sensibility and an open heart and mind.
2012 signalled Erin Propp as a distinguished performing and recording artist, debuting with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, opening for Gretchen Parlato at the Winnipeg International Jazz Festival, and releasing a full-length album with Larry Roy.
Courage, My Love is Erin’s debut album, a project in partnership with veteran Canadian jazz guitarist, Larry Roy. Erin’s crystalline voice is captured in this jazz/folk album, paired with Larry Roy’s guitar on seven originals by the duo, and five arrangements of jazz standards and pop tunes.
Courage, My Love runs from spare acoustic (Skylark, The Frost, Courage) to a warm electric (He Cries, Fitting In) and maintains a fluidity in its personal tone throughout. The originals by Erin & Larry are thoughtful, seamlessly arranged, and inventive while being accessible. This album appeals to the initiated jazz listener with Erin & Larry’s propensity for beautiful execution of improvised solos, while inviting in a new audience with highly personable lyrics and melodies.
Further to the originals, Erin penned lyrics for two of the jazz covers, Bobby Hutchinson’s “Little B’s Poem” and Horace Silver’s “Lonely Woman”, giving all new meaning and tone to the previously instrumental-only tunes. Erin & Larry’s interpretation of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” is another stand-out track, dynamic and brooding, and is an audience favourite in live performances.
Erin and Larry are joined by bassists Luke Sellick and Julian Bradford, pianist Will Bonness, drummer Curtis Nowosad, and saxophonist Jimmy Greene, with additional horns, strings, and percussion. Roy himself tackles not only his guitar, but dobro and banjo on several tracks (The Frost, Deloris). Two-time Grammy nominee Taylor Eigsti guests on “O Barquinho (Little Boat)”. Taylor’s visits to Winnipeg for jazz festivals and tours have had a very positive impact on the jazz community in Winnipeg, and Erin and Larry were thrilled to have him contribute to the album.
