What you gonna do, to wet your lips when the whole damn world’s gone dry?
Dyad is two voices, fiddle, banjo and guitar played by 3 musicians raised on everything from indie-rock and punk to classical music. The music they play spans generations and crosses cultures in America – ballads, old-time songs, and fiddle and banjo tunes lovingly extracted from Appalachian mountain traditions.
Kori Miyanishi (vocals, banjo, guitar, fiddle, jaw-harp), Leah Abramson (vocals, guitar) and Shiho Mizumoto (fiddle, low fiddle) play the music with an intense depth, while gently teasing and tossing it into a shape that reflects universal truths. “I think ultimately it is one’s environment that shapes what you do, who you are and where you want to go,” says Miyanishi, and it follows that all three members are active in their communities, working to forge links between the events of the past and the present day. Rather than changing traditional music, Dyad is more comfortable inhabiting it, and making it their own.
The fact that not one member has ever lived in Appalachia begs the question: Does it really f**kin’ matter? Though it may matter to some, Dyad believes in music’s ability to transcend time and culture.
So, what are you going to do, to wet your lips when the whole damn world’s gone dry? Pick up a fiddle, banjo or guitar and make it your own.
