biographical info

Out of a thriving landscape of Canadian indie music emerges acclaimed singer/songwriter Dan Kosub. This prolific, tour-savvy troubadour merges a unique brand of alternative rock with a bittersweet Elliott Smith-tinged chamber-pop melancholy. “Any genre of music that resonates with me has some roots in folk,” says Kosub. “Any vein I write in is influenced by those roots," he adds, lingering over a pot of coffee in his mid-town Toronto apartment.

The blonde singer/songwriter has spent the past year touring nationally in support of his sophomore record Jacob's Island.

After chalking up a plethora of performance highlights including back-to-back years at Canadian Music Week [this year at the Legendary Horseshoe Tavern], Victoria's Canada Day inner harbour celebrations, Indie Week, New Music West, and the Toronto International Film Festival, as well as many premier music venues across Canada including Toronto's 'Hugh's Room', Calgary's 'Ironwood Stage' Wakefield's 'Black Sheep Inn' and sharing bills with 'Said the Whale', 'The Zolas' and 'Bright Light Social Hour' Kosub is gearing up for an exciting 2012 summer. He plans for a new video and extensive Canadian tour dates. “I oscillate moment to moment from introvert to extrovert. Music allows me to express both sides,” says Kosub.

His quieter moments have found him compulsively scribbling on board Greyhound buses while touring nationally behind his debut album Reservoir; this resulted in a slick six-song EP produced by Vancouver's Winston Hauschild (Hey Ocean, Hannah Georgas.) Jacob's Island kicks off with the tuneful indie-pop groove of “Til I’m There” followed by the rock anthem “Aurelia,” which last year earned a presence on Canadian Mediabase Alternative Rock charts. The song muses on the fate of stars crushed beneath the weight of their fame. “On this record, I also delved into subject matter I didn't think would emerge for another few records,” explains Kosub, referring to the emotive “Fifteen Summers” penned on the 10th anniversary of his mother's death.

Kosub's family roots are a recurring theme in his music. His grandfather was a painter in the renowned Regina Five, while his mother was a sculptor and his father a musician in his own right. After relocating to Toronto in 2006, Kosub put those influences to good use, writing over 50 songs to be considered for Reservoir. The record was released in 2008, and featured signature tracks “I'll Never Know”, “Gone by 2040”, and “Blue & Grey” which received national attention and airplay on Much More Music.

As he re-tools for the coming months, Kosub has big things on the horizon. Keep tabs on his tour dates in Canada this summer. Kosub's latest release Jacob's Island and captivating live show is sure to get you on your feet and leave an indelible mark on you.
