biographical info

damhnait doyledamhnait doyle's latest CD, Lights Down Low, is a spectacular showcase for this vocal powerhouse.

Lights Down Low, is a collection of beautifully random cover tunes. doyle's gorgeous vocal intensity, paired with the musical ingenuity of her partner in the project, Danny Michel, create a disc that evokes feelings of tenderness and passion.

doyle and Michel play with rhythms and arrangements that honour well-known hits with fresh perspectives and a true love for the music. From the music box intro to Cheap Trick's "I Want You to Want Me," to the wanton vocals on Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," the interpretations are intelligent and irreverent.  There are flirtatious forays into 80's pop with chart topping singles from ABBA and Roxy Music, interspersed with the 'film noire' sound of the Foo Fighter's "Everlong" and Lucinda William's "Essence".  doyle refers to the CD as "the perfect dinner party record" in its eclectic representation of musical genres and eras.

damhnait's career is charging ahead on every level as she continues to explore a variety of creative outlets. In addition to this latest solo project, doyle and Kim Stockwood continue to perform and promote Shaye's last CD, Lake of Fire. The title track soared to #13 on the A/C charts and the next single You're Not Alone enjoyed similar success. The girls then filmed a four-part reality/documentary television series with Global Television that featured an authentic, unscripted and sometimes hysterical glimpse behind the entertainment curtain. Shaye's self-titled show aired initially on the E! Network and was picked up later that same year on Country Music Television (CMT).  The show followed the girls as they promoted Lake Of Fire, which built on the momentum established by two huge radio hits from the first CD The Bridge. Singles Happy Baby and Beauty both shot instantly into the Top 20 on the A/C charts. Happy Baby also earned a SOCAN Award, a Canadian Radio Music Award and a Juno nomination.

Performing with Shaye and as a solo artist, dav has toured Canada extensively, opening for legends like Willie Nelson and sharing the stage as a special guest with such artists as Nelly Furtado, Dido and Jann Arden. With Shaye, doyle represented Canada at Japan's 2005 Expo and performed as part of Parliament Hill's Canada Day celebrations.  She has travelled to both Kabul and Kandahar to perform for Canadian Forces personnel - initially as part of a CBC Television Christmas special and subsequently as a guest of General Rick Hillier. She also journeyed to Africa to contribute her talents to the documentary The Song for Africa, a project aimed at raising awareness among Canada's youth about the AIDS pandemic in Africa.  Her insightful and humorous account of her experiences is what prompted the publication of her first book, Miscellaneous Female.

damhnait also dedicates a significant amount of time and energy to collaborations.  Co-writing efforts have paid off with her original songs being recorded by Canadian Idol winners Brian Melo and Eva Avila, as well as Rex Goudie and Alexz Johnson.  Her songs have also been placed on TV shows such as Degrassi and Instant Star on numerous occasions.  Never one to stray far from a microphone, she has been a guest vocalist for Bruce Cockburn, Kevin Parent and Justin Nozuka - to name just a few.

doyle's last solo recording, dav-net, was a sophisticated, acoustic, roots/rock recording.  Her powerful original material garnered two 2004 East Coast Music Awards for Female and Pop/Rock Recording of the Year and Afterglow positioned her as a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.

From writing and performing, to directing a video or writing a weekly newspaper column, doyle seems to be tapped into an endless font of creative energy.  Who knows where that massive talent and insatiable curiousity will lead her next, but just for tonight, pour yourself a glass of wine, turn the Lights Down Low and enjoy.

REVIEW: Let It Be Tour : The works of Lennon and McCartney " ...my favourite performer was Doyle, whose sassy energy lit up the stage, while her dazzling sequined mini-dress and four-inch heels lent an air of glamour to the occasion. "I'm like Yoko Ono up here," she cracked. A natural comedian, she earned the heartiest laughs with her dead-on Sarah Palin impression, dedicating her velvety sung Girl, an ode to a ruthless love interest, to the Republican party's vice-presidential candidate." DAMHNAIT DOYLE - 'LIGHTS DOWN LOW' (Turtlemusik)

"From brooding Joy Division to buoyant ABBA, her renditions reflect instrumental reinventions and pared down, sensual vocals. It's wine drinking music and, as Doyle expresses, it was a marriage of wine and the production calibre of indie rocker Danny Michel that made the album sing."

Metro Toronto

"Doyle's song selection is eclectic and delicious -- ABBA's Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, The Hip's Bobcaygeon, The Clash's Train In Vain -- and her sultry, electro-acoustic renditions, including a demented music-box version of Cheap Trick's, I Want You To Want Me and a duet with producer Danny Michel on Bob Marley's Is This Love, are simply stellar".

Edmonton Journal ****

"Damhnait Doyle returns for her fifth solo disc, a collection of easy-going covers made perfect for an evening around the fireplace with a glass of wine.

Doyle's distinctive, sultry vocal and warm, sparse arrangements courtesy of Doyle and producer Danny Michel create an enjoyable disc of tender covers. They toned down the rockers and more upbeat tunes to fit the mood of the album. Highlights include Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart", the Hip's "Bobcaygeon", ABBA's "Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)", Lucinda Williams' "Essence" and the Foo Fighters' "Everlong". Doyle also performs a stripped down version of Cheap Trick's rocker "I Want You To Want Me" in a sweet, lullabyish form, complete with a music box in the background".

Times & Transcript ***

"Damhnait and Danny play with the rhythms and arrangements on this CD with new, fresh perspectives and an honest appreciation for the music. Together, they have fashioned the perfect sit and chill album and the covers they chose work remarkably well within their new musical environments".

http://www.noisemakessense.co.uk/ ****

"All-covers albums are usually safe bets, but Doyle takes lots of chances here. The wide and daring song selection highlights her strong and interesting voice. Produced, engineered and played by Danny Michel, whose greatest achievement has been a unique Bowie covers disc, he brings the same magic to Doyle's disc, deconstructing and re-arranging everything from Joy Division's Love Will Tear Us Apart to Roxy Music's More Than This. The disc is much more than tricks; Doyle's whispery-sultry vocals shine on The Tragically Hip's Bobcaygeon and Lucinda Williams's Essence. Her best work to date".

Telegraph Journal

"Lights Down Low allowed her to stretch her musical chops a bit further, lending her interpretive skills to songs by artists ranging from Cheap Trick and Roxy Music to Joy Division and the Clash".

Chronicle Herald

Damhnait chose an assorted palette of musical styles, she has mastered turning them into her very own sound - a difficult feat with such well-known hits. Her sultry, rich style is passionate and provides the perfect backdrop to a warm dinner party filled with good friends, laughter and wine."

"Recorded very independently and simply, the disc strips down pop and rock standards from the last thirty years to the acoustic standards they've become... Doyle is an incredibly gifted vocalist..."

"Damhnait Doyle's latest release, Lights Down Low, brings Damhnait's gorgeous vocals together with songs that we know and love, like Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," The Tragically Hip's "Bobcaygeon," and Bob Marley's "Is This Love." Her voice drips like honey and envelops you. If you haven't heard her yet, you should. She has one of those voices that will forever pull you in, no matter how many times you listen to a track".

Nicely wrapping the album up is Damhnait Doyle’s deceptively simple cover of the over-covered “I Want You To Want Me.” Somehow, the Canadian pop singer manages to trot this old horse out in a way that feels both fresh and invigorating.

Review: The Heartbrroken Bring Power and Emotion To Vancouver

posted by Damhnait Doyle

It started out as a quiet Tuesday evening at The Media Club in Vancouver B.C. however it didn’t last for long. First on tonight’s bill was acoustic, folk artist Jonas Shandel.  Shandel is a Vancouver local and best known for his work in Canadian band, Headwater. But now after releasing a 7 track self titled EP in 2009, Shandel is branching out on his own.

Shandels set started out a bit on the calm side, playing to a crowd no bigger than thirty. But despite how unnerving it may seem, he made the most out of it. Shandels songs The Difter and All Good Things are the kind that makes you long for warm summer days and carefree afternoons. He relates to the crowd by drawing inspiration from everyday life, especially Facebook creeping as he mentioned. Listening to them in an intimate setting couldn’t have been better.

Afterwards, headlining band of the evening, The Heartbroken took the stage. Damhnait Doyle, Peter Fusco, Stuart Cameron and Blake Manning who make up this Ontario band describe themselves as “Whether they’re on guitar, piano, mandolin, drums, banjo, bass or monosynth, it doesn’t matter who’s playing what, they are lungs to heart and heart to blood” And after seeing their set, I wholeheartedly agree.

The Heartbroken’s name alone can essentially sum up the power and emotion behind their songs. With songs about troubling past relationships that come off as raw and real, they’re songs that are extremely relatable and each song is it’s own a story that keeps you wanting to listen to from beginning to end.

When front woman Dahmnait Doyle rang out her first two notes, the strength in her voice alone brought life into the crowd.  Their first song, Tonight Tonight, was a stunning opener that gave the crowd a feel for the style of the band; however it set the bar high for what songs were to come later that night. The Heartbroken’s set list only got better as it went on, emotional ballad, Save Yourself, a song about toxic relationships and abuse, held such strong lyrics it brought a wave of silence across the crowd, even bringing one audience member to tears. The Heartbroken continued to play tracks off their album, titled Tonight, Tonight for the rest of the evening.

The Heartbroken are an extremely talented Canadian band that you need to be on the lookout for. Although their Canadian tour is now wrapping up, I am certain they will be back.
