biographical info
dUbTeT is a multi-instrumentalist duo combining the roots of reggae, the swing of samba, the drive of dancehall, and the sonic sorcery of dub. Both members play live and sample on the fly, creating hypnotic grooves and kaliedescopic soundscapes.
Dan Beer emerged from Canada's West Coast alternative music scene of the 1980's playing drums in Victoria's Noise Generation, Mexican Power Authority, and INRI among others. After training in modern dance, he discovered the afro-brasilian martial art of Capoeira, and was a percussionist and singer for a traditional group performing Capoeira, Samba, Maracatu, Coco, and Samba Reggae. His interest in electronica led to the live dub reggae group Pacific Frontal System. Today he is musical director and percussionist for the flamenco group Flamenco Rebelde as well as one half of dUbTeT.
Ian Avery came to Victoria in 1996 to study trumpet and electronic music at the University of Victoria, and began playing in local Ska groups, before finding a King Tubby record, which hooked him for life on Dub Reggae. He began playing Dub in Pacific Frontal System with Dan Beer, who introduced Ian to Capoeira, which led to playing Brasilian samba. During this time they also played bossa nova with Victoria’s BossaYou.
dUbTeT is a hybrid of these Jamaican and Brasilian influences, a dubwise integration of some of the lushest and most exciting elements of global roots and electronica.
