biographical info
Drawing on a broad base of rock influences from U2 and Joy Division to Constantines and Cap'N Jazz, Debaser creates their own dark and melodic atmospshere infused with haunting vocals, reverb drenched guitars, lush basslines and hook-riddled drum beats.
Debaser formed in January of 2001 while all four members were still in high school at the Etobicoke School of the Arts to play a one off cover of "Psycho Killer" by the Talking Heads. The gig was so much fun that reherseals continued and orginal material soon followed.
Debaser played its real first live show at the Silver Dollar in 2003 after Dan Burke stumbled into their rehersal space (above a Burger King) on night and booked them on the spot. A self titled, home recorded EP (April 2004) soon followed and got Debaser airplay on CFNY, CKLN, CHRW, CIUT and received a positive (NNN) review in Now Magazine.
In June 2005 Debaser got to play their first NXNE showcase. Despite being booked to play the 360 (which closed forever 5 days before the show) Debaser still rocked a huge crowd at the infamous Club OV's, receiving praise from the Toronto Star's Tabassum Siddiqui, "rising young local indie-rockers Debaser take their cues from the dark, angular sounds of the 80s... their dynamic NXNE set showed that they've gelled into a tight unit that deserves to find a wider audience when their debut album is released this fall."
