Corey Isenor, in addition to being President of Bigelow house and a busy Fine Arts student, is a talented and gifted musician. With the release of his short, six-song debut release, +Love+Art+Country+Music+, Isenor shows his striking ability to write nicely balanced and lyrically creative pop songs which, thankfully, do not inspire lamentations on the downfall of the modern acoustic-folk renaissance.
The opening song, "Birthday", is a case in point. It is quite catchy from the outset with a steady, rhythmic guitar riff that has some real substance independent of the lyrics. That being said, the lyrics complement the instrumentation almost to perfection, picking up strength at the strumming's low points. "Country Dirt Road Love" is a nice, faster-paced love song that will have your toe-tappin' needs fullfilled rather quickly. "Footprints" is a traditional coming-of-age folk song: nostalgic for the past, yet tempered with the understanding that it is no longer attainable. It is a very personal song, definitely not out of place on this record. "Mainstreet" gives us a glimpse of Isenor's all-too-brief use of the harmonica, and develops further his seeming mastery of lyrical form and clever rhyme to convey an intention or meaning perhaps unnoticed upon first listen. "Tiger Lilly" and "Walk on Water" close out the album. The former is an unsurprising song that builds on elements present in the previous song, while the latter features friend and fellow Mountie Pat LePoidevin on backing vocals and guitar, and also represents what we can expect from Isenor in the future: a more diverse, expansive notion of songwriting and instrumentation. Adding backing vocals, harmonica, and an extra guitar to the mix, Isenor's honest and sweet sound can only gets better.
This album is a collection of very nice pop songs that don't require much imagination or thought, and they're not meant to. If you have the chance to see Corey live, I would suggest doing so.
