biographical info

What’s Canadian, has been dormant for the past five years and began as nothing more than a figment of some crazy Albertan’s imagination as a way to sell tee shirts to high school kids? If you said the Yeti or Abominable Snowman, you’re completely nuts, as those are both from Tibet. I’m actually talking about everyone’s favorite long running pop punk upstarts Chixdiggit! And do you know why I’m talking about them? Well, it’s because they’re back from the land of hockey puck dreams with a new album of asskicking jams, entitled Safeways, Here We Come which is available Feb. 15, 2011 from your favorite label run completely by semi-rehabilitated perverts, Fat Wreck Chords, and to top it off, Chixdiggit! is bringing their fifth-of-a-century of rock and roll experience to your crappy town for you and your buddies to tremble before and behold firsthand. So, uh, get stoked, bro.

Okay, quick history lesson: Chixdiggit! was originally conceived by four guys who couldn’t play instruments after they made enough money selling tee shirts around their high school (for an at-the-time fictional band called Chixdiggit!) to purchase some drums. If that doesn’t make sense, read on, because that’s just how stuff works in Chixdiggit! land. That was in 1991. Since then, Chixdiggit! have toured the world, put out records on indie juggernaut Sub Pop, wacky Fat Wreck subsidiary Honest Dons, Bad Taste (where they re-recorded and re-released a new version of their very first album…Weird, right?) and most recently Fat Wreck Chords proper. They’ve got more releases than a minimum-security prison in Holland and they’ve been on hiatus at least once, or maybe even twice, depending on who you ask, or maybe they’ve just been up to other shit. Hell, who knows?

Well, here’s what we do know: they’re back in 2011 with their first release in five years, Safeways, Here We Come, which is the culmination of their 20 years of friendship and buzzsaw pop-flavored punk rock mastery. Of course, over the span of two decades, the boys have also perfected the fine art of dicking around and as such Chixdiggit! manages to get a few pisstakes in on some lame ass hipster haircuts (‘Swedish Rat’) and devote a whole chorus to a buddy of singer KJ’s shitty dog (‘Since You Got a Dog’) among other things. This record is more than sweet melodies and powerchords, folks. This is Canadian style pop, punk, comedy, social commentary, all rolled into one, and fuck, it’s named after a place that sells rubbers and candy bars, so there’s that too.

But don’t take my word for it. Between doing whatever it is these former runaways turned punk-rock-wisecrackers turned dudes-that-will-show-up-two-hours-late-to-their-show-in-Berlin-because-they’re-just-as-interested-in-checking-out-the-local-culture-as-they-are-getting-sweaty-for-a-bunch-of-blue-haired-weirdos do back at home, Chixdiggit! is hitting the road this year in support of Safeways, Here We Come and going as far and as wide as their grueling work schedules permit. Word on the streets is that they’re playing SXSW and Weasel Fest in Chicago and beginning in March, extensively traversing the US and Canada. Come for the rock or come for the jokes or come and just marvel at the fact that four dudes that look this young have been doing this for twenty years. Is it the genes? Is it that clean Canadian air? Is there really a song on this record called ‘Hot n Horny’? Wow. That’s awesome.
