biographical info
Casino formed in 2007. Initially playing simplistic funk music, the band began to mature and move into other genres under the umbrella of jazz, including latin and bebop. Numerous improvised jam sessions have proven fruitful for Casino, as the trio frequently shifts in and out of grooves while changing styles, moods, dynamics, and creating riffs. Each member adds their dialogue to a musical mix which may be termed as a "conversation", and the raw sax/piano/drums format gives ease to these spontaneous grooves. Driven not by thumping or walking bass, the group is propelled by the percussive, floating, and occasionally dissonant piano lines of Jonathan Tobin which are given extra flavour with the light touches of David Park's relaxed drumming style. Soaring over a solid piano-drums rhythm section is Stephan Smith, interpreting melodies and adding flair to notes on a page and improvised melodies with ease. Colour and sound collide when the group plays - this is a trio which swings hard, but can create tender ballads within a moment's notice. Still in high school, these budding musicians have an affinity to win over crowds with a youthful energy and openminded attitude toward musical styles.
The group's first, eponymous EP, was released on February 19th and will be available on iTunes soon. The "Casino EP" features compositions by Jonathan Tobin and Stephan Smith, including Jonathan's award-winning ballad, "The Rain". Recklessly developmental, the group has begun expanding the roots of their fusion sound and is incorporating darker, heavier, and more modern vibes.
