Last year Cadence Weapon and fellow musicians Laura Barrett, Mark Hamilton (Woodpiegeon), and filmmaker Peter Lynch (Project Grizzly) paired up to travel into Waterton Lakes National Park to write collaborative songs while experiencing Canada's rugged terrain, all captured on HD film, creating one of thirteen tales of the inspiring new documentary series The National Parks Project.

The National Parks Project is a 13-part documentary series that pairs Canadian filmmakers and artists together across the country to improvise in each province's most beautiful parks, and the list of participants includes Shad, the Besnard Lakes, Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts, Melissa Auf der Maur, Jim Guthrie, Apostle of Hustle, Think About Life, Billy Talent, The Constantines and more.

As a companion piece, National Parks Project have released the music this week, with proceeds from sales of the National Parks Project Soundtracks going to the Nature Conservancy of Canada.  Available now are a 20-track CD and a 26-track double-LP, and seven digital EPs containing 49 tracks, which are on iTunes and streaming at the National Parks Project website.

The always-grinding Writer, Producer and Performer Roland Pemberton aka Cadence Weapon is back once again, and he continues to firmly establish his legacy as a pioneer in a passionate crusade to push the rap and electronic music envelope. 

TRON Legacy: The Mixtape is a brand new 18-track collection of Cadence Weapon rapping over some his favourite beats of late.

Pemberton recently described TRON Legacy: The Mixtape in an exclusive interview with Exclaim.ca "I wanted to do something similar to The Drought series by Lil’ Wayne, just rapping over beats that I really like…It's a back to basics kind of thing. I'm rapping over Gucci Mane beats and I rapped over an Arcade Fire song…My idea was to do a parody of your typical rap mixtape…I've been noticing with a lot of mixtapes is that rappers are talking about movies they had nothing to do with. T.I. has this mixtape where he's Photoshopped himself into the cover of Inception and there are all these skits, but really he had nothing to do with the movie."  

True to form, the first track opens the mixtape with Cadence talking about his involvement with the movie, all the work that went into the soundtrack, hanging out with Daft Punk and working with Jeff Bridges. The 18 tracks, brought together in a 40-minute collection includes Cadence Weapon dropping rhymes over beats by Gucci Mane, The Arcade Fire, Big Boi, Sleigh Bells, Daft Punk, Jay-Z, Raekwon, E-40 and features guest vocals by Buck 65, Shad, Subtitle, Birdapres, Kazmega, among others.

Last month, The faces of Canadian hip hop: D-Sisive, Muneshine, Famous, Shad, Saukrates, Maestro Fresh Wes, Buck 65 and Cadence Weapon gathered at Wrongbar in Toronto to exchange ideas and discuss the current state of hip hop in Canada. Each MC ended up throwing down a rhyme. Watch the video here.

The Upper Class family sends our love, respect and congratulations to Roland Pemberton aka Cadence Weapon and the Pemberton family!Teddy Pemberton, Rollie's dad, was a pioneering college radio DJ in Edmonton, and is being honoured this week at the Stylus Awards. He went by T.E.D.D.Y. and is credited with not only helping launch CJSR-FM back in 1980, birthing one of Canada's finest college radio stations, but is known as the man who brought hip hop, jazz, funk, rhythm and blues and reggae to Alberta through his show The Black Experience In Sound.Tonight, May 31, Canada's National DJ Awards, the Stylus Awards, will be inducting T.E.D.D.Y. into the Hall Of Fame as part of their 2010 Awards Show. Roland Pemberton along with members of his family will be in attendance at the Awards in Toronto, and Cadence will accept the award on behalf of his T.E.D.D.Y.

Montreal's Think About Life have released their debut 7" in the UK via Euphonios Records. It's the single for their jam "Sweet Sixteen" and the B-side is "Sweet Sixteen" remixed by Cadence Weapon!

Canada Reads 2010, the annual battle of the books involves celebrity guests defending their choice of novel. They debate their choices every day for a week on CBC Radio One before choosing a single book they believe Canadians would enjoy reading. Books are gradually voted off until a winner is declared.

His Lordship, Edmonton Poet Laureate, Rollie Pemberton better known to us as Cadence Weapon will be defending Douglas Coupland’s book “Generation X”.  Pemberton faces off against CityTV Vancouver's Evening News Anchor Simi Sara who is defending "Good to a Fault" by Marina Endicott, Esteemed Author/Literary Critic/Director/Publisher Michel Vézina, who is defending "Nikolski" by Nicolas Dickner, translated by Lazer Lederhendler, Founder and Executive Director of War Child Canada Samantha Nutt, who is defending "The Jade Peony" by Wayson Choy, and two-time Olympian and eight-time Canadian champion Track and Field Athlete Perdita Felicien, who is defending "Fall on Your Knees" by Ann-Marie MacDonald

Cadence selected "Generation X" because he feels it is representative of him, his friends and the transient nature of youth, “I knew people who’d done some of those things and felt the buzzwords were still relevant. The book is just very real.” Says Pemberton “It’s the one I instantly thought of if I could represent a book, and a book I felt was thematically similar to things I’ve written and believe”

The UC Family sends congratulations to Mr. Roland Pemberton (or is it Sir Pemberton now?) aka Cadence Weapon, who this week was announced Edmonton, Alberta's next Poet Laureate.

 His Lordship kicks in July 1, 2009 and he will reign as Laureate for 2 years. What does this mean you ask? Well, historically, a Poet Laureate served as the official chronicler of state events and occasions. In ancient times, the Laureate was the central means for recording and communicating history. For the City of Edmonton, the role of a Poet Laureate is to reflect the life of a city through poetry, as an ambassador for the literary arts; the Laureate incorporates poetry into a range of official and informal city activities. The creation of this position confirms the city's support for the arts in general, and for the literary arts in particular. So, to sum it up, Cadence Weapon is now officially a government agent.
