biographical info

A Monday afternoon, downtown.

With the fire engines, coffee cups and winter tires, we still slip about into doorways and out of sight behind the winter's blaze and clock's steady breath. Time's been on our side these days. The old man's hat's on tight in the wind and the youngsters still stagger up street smoking their cigarettes and leaving the sidewalk in stitches. And we speak and speak and speak, and read aloud our wretched news.

Tomorrow night in this town is like Sunday morning for me. Bukowski in a stolen backpack and borrowed blues that never speak their wretched news too loud, always just right on the line  .......   smooth and steady like the clock's breath or the youngster's cigarette.

---I am currently working on a full-length album, to be done and to you in Spring 2009

Influences range from Paul Simon (& Art Garfunkel), Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk and Woody Guthrie to Bright Eyes, Bonnie Prince Billy, M. Ward, Iron & Wine, Xavier Rudd. I have spent the last two years traveling in a van, on a bicycle, and on my feet and my real biggest influences are the people, environments, and situations I encounter as I share my music and words with the folks and the birds around me.

So..first blog of the trip.

Bright and early tomorrow morning I leave Medicine Hat with a bicycle, a guitar, and some essential livings (tape recorder, sleeping bag, pocket knife)... Running circles today to get everything together...quite dizzying..so stoked for tomorrow...open road and open fields and wind and sun and going in one direction for hours...travelling simply for the sake of those things will very much make it worth it.

I met these two fellows about a week ago downtown Medicine Hat sitting in front of The Roastery cafe, two bicycles leaned against the wall, and a sign that said something to the effect of:

"Biking from Langley BC to Halifax NS
Bracelets $5
Necklaces $10
Donations welcome"

So I gave them a place to crash, meal, hot shower, and the next day rode with them to Cypress Hills provincial park... two absolutely liberated individuals...cyclists by day, punk rockers by night, scientists, conversationalists, artists in every sense... just really rad dudes. So... best of luck to Jawn and Laurie on their journey east. If either of you read this... Marmaduke is back in the lab!! Simply..science. Modern day nomad science my friends.

First entry...just to get the writing into the flow.

Cheers,
Brett

P.S. Vetiver released an album of covers a few weeks ago called "A Thing Of The Past". The song choices are unbelievable...Loudon Wainwright to Hawkwind to Townes Van Zandt...listened to it non-stop today...thought you ought to know.
