biographical info
Playing AM radio hits from a parallel universe, Betty Burke evokes darker images of transient and unsettled relationships between people and their environments, and situations of opportunity and despair. Founded by novelist and songwriter Maggie MacDonald (The Hidden Cameras, Republic of Safety, The Barcelona Pavilion), Betty Burke includes multitalented musician/publisher/activists Jo Snyder on guitar and Sheila Sampath on bass and organ. Formerly of bands CN Power and The Airfields, Sheila is the Art and Editorial Director of Shameless Magazine. The magazine’s Editor, Jo Snyder, spent ten years touring with Winnipeg-based punk bands Sixty Stories and Anthem Red, and continues to tour as a solo performer. BB's frequent collaborators include Holly Andruchuk, with whom BB did a 2010 tour opening for Woodpigeon, Shaun Brodie, who has played trumpet and keys with everyone from AC Newman to Dan Mangan, and friends from The Hidden Cameras like Newfoundlanders Jon Hynes and John Power. For almost every show, Maggie writes a new tune to be sung by guest a singer, on whose life the song is based- Gentleman Reg, Lief Mossbaugh, Stephanie Markowitz and Sarianna Mileski have been featured in this ritual. Betty Burke’s first EP The Dirty Mouth of The St Lawrence River, recorded with producer James Bunton (Ohbijou, Diamond Rings), was released with Blocks Recording Club in February 2011. www.bettyburke.com
