Benjamin Ross has an ear for simplistic guitar lines with big hooks and catchy melodies. Born in Stanley, New Brunswick, Ross didn't realize his penchant for songwriting until moving to Fredericton in 2007. Upon arriving Ross met several likeminded friends, all with a passion and dedication to music to match his own. This adjustment allowed Ross to grow both as a musician and as a lyricist.
He is comfortable writing songs with topics ranging from childhood to heartbreak; equally apt at exploring the essence of innocence as well as the loss once it's gone. With a folk sensibility, these songs are effortlessly relatable. His lyrics don't strain to impress because they don't have to. He writes quiet songs with dynamic vocals and has a voice that flows seamlessly from a soft whisper to soaring harmonies.
Ross draws influence from his music library as much as he does from his closest friends. He lists Bob Dylan, Devendra Banhart and the Arcade Fire as artists that helped shape his sound, but his music is far from a direct homage to his heroes. He is equally inspired by his surroundings; going to local shows, and interacting with the scene has given him license to develop his sound - motivating him to improve and grow as a musician.
For now Ross' challenge lies in deciding what comes next. If you need to find him just look in his room, where he'll probably be chain-smoking, guitar on his lap as he meticulously taps out the melody for his next chorus. With several songs prepared, Ross is heading in to the studio where he hopes to expand his sound without losing the intimacy implicit in his songwriting.
