biographical info

Rugged, raspy, and roaring with charisma, Halifax’s Ben Caplan is to folklore what smoke is to bourbon. Perfectly coupled. Ben’s songwriting is as bold in range as it is in ferocity. Fueled by a quality of melodrama and powerful lyricism, it’s the romance and the manhood crashing with his voice that gives Caplan a truly innovative and experimental artistry. A sound that bridges the gap between controlled composition and unruly passion.

Striding in pace with gypsy-inspired strings amid the sultry tones of clarinet and saxophone, Caplan has marked his place in the Canadian music landscape with a growling spirit similar to that of Tom Waits. Caplan’s tours have extended throughout the Commonwealth, the rhapsodic energy in his live show an elegant cacophony gaining attention around the world.

Breaking between guitar, banjo, piano, and melodica, Caplan’s stage show is almost reminiscent of a burly and bearded Freddy Mercury; a raging, strong, and exploratory songwriter, it’s the blues in his soul, and the heart in your chest pounding as one that makes Ben Caplan & The Casual Smokers an act not to be missed.

Ben Caplan has been a touring musician since 2006. Seasoned in coast-to-coast travel, Caplan his seen stages in the UK and has performed a rolodex of festivals.

Day 3 – The Road is So Glamorous!

posted by Julie C

The bed was more comfortable than it looks. It’s being deflated in that picture above. Last night I stayed in Toronto with my friends Rob and Olivia. Yesterday was a really wonderful day. I didn’t get the chance to play any music at all, but I still had a nice time.

I started my morning by heading to a meeting with my management. Working out some details for the summer tour, and re-vamping a few things. Most important is that we are going to get my online store fixed up in the near future. It is in desperate need of fixer upper. Right now though, if you want to buy my shirts or music, the best place to do it is at Maple Music. Click this link here: MAPLE MUSIC!!!!

After that I met up with my Canadian agent, Adam Kreeft, and he showed me around his Toronto office at The Agency Group. It was great getting the chance to rub elbows with some amazing agents and see the place where the magic happens. Adam and I then had a very long “meeting” over some drinks. I like that my work life frequently intersects with drinking. It’s nice.

Today has so far been full of running around and carrying heavy things. Trying to get my supply of merch sorted out for the rest of the summer. I am trying to carry enough CDs, vinyl, and t-shirts with me to last for the whole summer. It’s heavy! If you can do me a favour by buying as much of it as you can, it will make my life easier…. come on…

I’m just sitting in a cafe doing my new “blog” thing, as well as listening to some support acts that have been pitched for my shows in Germany. I don’t always get to pick my support acts, and when I do it’s usually just a “yes” or “no” decision. I liked what I heard though, so it was wonderful to say yes. One day, when all my shows are guaranteed sell outs, then I’ll have a lot more creative control over those things, but in the meantime, I am really happy with the stuff that is coming across my desk, so it all works out!

Tonight I’m off to visit my parents in Hamilton for the night, and then it’s straight back to Toronto to play a SOLD OUT show at The Rivoli. The online tickets sold out this morning, and we are just trying to figure out if there are any physical tickets floating around at any outlets. Check my twitter and Facebook to see if the show is officially sold out, or if we have a couple last tickets hiding somewhere. Can’t wait for the gig!

Ta ta for now
