biographical info
"If you’re not sure whether you want to dance a jig to some Newfoundland music or pump your fist to some rock n’ roll, At Ships End may be the band you want to see." – (The Scope Magazine) . At Ships End are a unique Folk/Rock band consisting of six members all hailing from St. John's, Newfoundland. They released their first self-titled EP in October 2009, consisting of four original songs which were composed by At Ships End. The EP was self recorded by band member Adam Hunt.
The songs on the EP quickly grew into local anthems, with songs like "Have you Ever" being featured on a local brewery—Quidi Vidi Brewery—commercial, giving the band an opportunity to receive regular airplay on local television stations over the past year. At Ships End have been packing local bars gig after gig, and have sold out several St. John's venues such as Club One, The Rockhouse, and Trapper John's. The band has also played with many sensational acts such as The Dropkick Murphys, Joel Plaskett Emergency, and The Stanfields.
Describing the sound of At Ships End is a very complex task as the band has many musical influences ranging from traditional, classical, and folk artists to many different punk and rock bands. When ‘mashing’ all these influences together, one would find a unique sound of upbeat rock tempos and distorted guitars infused with the traditional sounds of fiddle, mandolin and banjo. The result is too hard to try to fit into one genre, and is best described as a traditional folk sound with a punk-rock feel.
Recently, the musicians of At Ships End finished recording their first full length album entitled "Awake". The band has teamed up with local producer Tony Murray, and engineer Spencer Crewe creating a final product that shows a more mature and diverse side of the band with more emotional creativity and energy than in the past. The new album, consisting of 10 songs that have been written and recorded by At Ships End features several guest vocal performances including Matthew Hornell, Kalem Mahoney and Maureen Ennis. "Awake" was released on Febuary 24, 2012 and is available in select stores and on iTunes.
