biographical info
Mr. Aref Sea was raised on 70's and 80's pop music while growing up between
Northern Saskatchewan, the Okanagan, and the Northwest
Territories before moving to Regina, SK in high school. It was in the heart of the praries where he started
playing bass in garage bands. Skateboarding and loud music dominated
his life for years until he discovered his mother's Lorreena McKennitt
tapes. Sea bought his first djembe when master drummer Joseph Ashong
sparked Regina's first round of drum circles. This was followed by a move to Victoria. For a stint Sea grew fond of the Andean busking groups, African
marimba music, and the soundtrack to 'The Secret of Roan Inish'.
For seven years Sea worked as a treeplanter in BC, occasionally playing
campfire songs on acoustic guitar when his wrists were not overly
inflamed from the day's work. Towards the end of his treeplanting
career Sea's two sisters suddenly took up guitar and introduced him to
the wonders of country and bluegrass music and learning cover songs. In
2005, he returned to Regina where he joined the hip-hop,
folk-funk-soul-rock band, The Earth Tones. This lead to Sea's love affair with Dub, Reggae, and Funk music. Three years later, Sea began collecting instruments and experimenting with recordings at his home in the Qu'Appelle Valley. Those recordings were then presented to Orion Paridis, wizard of Soul Sound Studio in
Regina.
The summer of 2010 Sea's first self-titled album was released.
