biographical info

Anita Eccleston is a trumpet player and vocalist performing music that ranges from traditional jazz standards to funk, soul, motown, reggae, blues, pop and originals. Whether she is appearing with her quartet, trio or solo she is able to transition smoothly between genres and always connects with her audience.

Imagine Amy Winehouse out on the town with Miles Davis, watching Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Billie Holiday as they discover the meaning of life in the midst of a spontaneous jam with Chet Baker and Poe, the Mistress of Groove.

Skillful trumpet player, energetic singer, and apt arranger, Anita Eccleston is an emerging young Canadian jazz artist with something to say. Her experiences in a wide variety of performing ensembles, from jazz combos, ska/reggae bands, metal bands, big bands, to even a professional symphony orchestra, have laid the path for her burgeoning music career. Driven by a deep conviction to connect with the audience, her performances are high energy, and her original songs compelling.

Her formal training at McGill University’s renowned jazz studies program, Eccleston has recently returned from Montreal to her British Columbian roots, forming groups in Kamloops and Vancouver with whom she performs regularly in clubs, coffee houses and public outdoor concert series.

Vocal styles that are often effusive and clever contrasted by lyrical trumpet playing and fluent solos by her fellow musicians, her performances offer a variety of musical tastes, demonstrating versatility and her charismatic ability to enrapture the audience with her distinctive sound.

Eccleston’s music is about the moment, just as in her approach to life. It captivates within itself, while also transporting the listener to any moment, carrying with it the same power and excitement as the first time it was heard.

In summer 2011 Eccleston pre-released her debut self-titled Jazz EP. It is a collection of jazz recordings from 2003 to 2010, illustrating her development from the McGill days jamming in her Montreal living room, to the professional sessions with her current British Columbia lineup. After relocating to Vancouver in September 2011 she held the Official CD Launch Party on November 30th, 2011 in Vancouver.

Hot on the heels of the Jazz EP will be Eccleston’s long awaited original LP which she has been recording and producing since June 2010. Rough mixes of two tracks, “Scarlet Scribbles,” and ”Claim On You” are available for preview on her website and social networking platforms.

Honest Music

“Music is, or was, the language of the emotions.” – Charles Mingus

Well put words to simply embrace the heart of the matter which makes me happy to be alive every day. Amy Winehouse also felt that to connect with her listeners she had to write and put out honest, emotional music. I couldn’t agree more. To really connect we have to be willing to show our underbellies and to accept that the flaws within us are the same frail, human flaws that are in everyone we meet. Music is that common ground where we can all feel vulnerable and accept ourselves, or be upset with ourselves until we have felt that expression release us from the negative emotions and steer us eventually toward the positive ones. How come a sad song makes a sad person feel better? Why doesn’t it always work? Or does it work and we cannot see it until we are far enough away to gain the perspective? Mingus’ “or was” gives us a sense that even his faith in what music should be was being tested. In our current day and age with the plethora of genre bending and blending, the emergence of electronic music and it’s bearing on the emotionality of music, it becomes easy to see where he was coming from. There seems to be an emotional disconnect in some of this very electronically oriented music until we can find the heart within it. Yet as our wise friend Dan Mangan points out most poignantly, “Robots need love too, they want to be loved by you…”

I am discussing this because I have always been curious as to where music has been, where it is now and where it is going. If the people making it can find a way to continue sustaining themselves and continue making music then all is well and safe. There is the issue of downloading and the sense of entitlement that the current generation has regarding ownership of music and believing that it is free if you can find it online somewhere. It comes down to the fact that the industry is in need of a revolution and is generally broken, due to music theft, and too many middle men mass producing over commercialized albums. The conundrum for your honest independent, unsigned, self producing artist is how to sustain themselves while developing their craft. There really are not enough hours in the day for one person to thoroughly and effectively cover all the areas of ground that need to be addressed when working towards a goal of simply sharing your honest, emotional music. Looking at the other side of the coin though, we can draw upon the many frustrations that we encounter to find the inspiration to write even more passionate music, ever looking on the bright side am I. ;)
