artist Aidan Knight

Victoria's Aidan Knight isn't entirely opposed to being labelled a singer-songwriter; He certainly has some shared characteristics with the likes of Nick Drake and Judee Sill. His early life, from growing up in a second-hand store in Chinatown to drumming in a hardcore band, certainly reads like a biography of one such travelled musician. But Knight's musical ambitions stretch much further than the quiet and introspective leanings of the above list; His live collaborators utilize bowed glockenspiel, flugelhorns, octaved viola, gritty spring reverb, and live looping. His use of experimentalism and noise has drawn comparisons to Steve Reich and Wilco. On 2010's Versicolour, Knight presented a powerful first collection of songs and landed on year end best-of lists online and in print; toured and performed with Patrick Watson, Frank Black, Dan Mangan, and Tegan & Sara; and won awards from CBC Radio.

He followed with an unexpected 2 song 7" EP, Friendly Fires, in November and unfurled lyrics with forgotten friendships, brewers picking fresh hops, and children writing plays for their parents. Throughout the songs, we caught another glimpse of a wildy creative and oddly mature songwriter and bandleader. Alongside Olivier Clements, Julia Wakal, David Barry, and Colin Nealis; Knight brought these songs to theatre stages, house concerts, and bars across canada. 

He is currently recording a sophomore full-length, due in 2012.
