biographical info
Afrokyou is the fusion of African rhythms, Colombian Folklore, and electronic music. Juan Carlos Medrano began his musical studies with the introduction of the native Colombian instrument, Gaita, at the age of 17. There was an instant connection between him and the musical spirit of the flute-like instrument and within a very short time, he found himself the winner of the national Gaita Festival in Colombia at 18 years of age. Within 5 years, Medrano became not only an accomplished Gaitero and music educator, but also a talented percussionist, frequently requested to play with many musical groups, including recording and touring in Mexico, England, France and Canada. Touring led him to Toronto and the music has been flowing ever since.
