biographical info

Atomis [ATOM-iss] is a post-rock/experimental outfit with a siamese twist. Incorporating elements of sludge and shoegaze, each song is carefully crafted to express concern over the state of our current social norms.

Comprised of members from Somastate and Pure City, they are an instrumental group that relies heavily on visuals in their live show. What's more: they have abandoned the frontman-centric approach to music.

"We've been playing in bands for years, but this is a more experimental avenue to writing music than anything our previous bands ever did," says drummer Nathan Navetto. "ATOMIS doesn’t rely on vocals, but is more or less focused on atmosphere and ambience," says Navetto.

Influences range from bands like Mogwai and Cult of Luna to Sigur Ros and Russian Circle, while fusing elements of shoegaze and dream-pop.

The band has been writing songs about social issues, aiming to capture the mood associated with darker topics such as truck-stop prostitution and animal abuse. Live visuals enhance the listening experience.

"Visuals allow people to draw themselves into the music through what they're seeing, as well as what they're hearing in hopes of evoking a certain emotion. Our music may be one of the only examples of that in Calgary."

ATOMIS is Nathan Navetto, Matthew McLaughlin, Taylor Johnson.
