biographical info

Kingston blues-rock band takes their sound and depth of music to a new level.

The band formed in January 2011, after co-founders Andrew Mack and Bryon McConnell saw the potential and opportunity to take their backroom jam sessions further.  The purchase of some used PA gear, upgrades in guitars and keyboards, and some new band members have brought them into the music scene.

Continually evolving and re-inventing themselves, they have brought on board a new bass player, Mike Pacey, and a drummer, Rick Gravel (a.k.a the electric time machine), to build their characteristic country rock and blues sound.

As Andrew and Bryon put it “We play music for people to enjoy and listen to, to add fun to our lives.  Do we play to be rich?  No.  Do we play to be famous? Maybe.  Either way we do play to make people smile and feel good.”

Their premiere album by the Kingston band A Few Innocent Civilians satisfies many a listener's needs with fat blues and swinging rock rhythms, flavours of Latin syncopation, as well as thought-provoking folk sounds.  The band incorporates three-part harmonies to enrich the feeling of their songs.  With the injection of mandolin and harmonica on various songs the music is captivating through all ten tracks.

The album was released in November 2011 as an independent venture, recorded mostly live off the floor by Patunes Recording Studio in Charleston, Ontario.  This approach is evident by the raw energy and authentic sound on the songs.  A Few Innocent Civilians are enthusiastic about the diversity of their songs and the resulting exposure from this album. The songs can be easily downloaded or purchased from iTunes, CD Baby, via Facebook, or through Amazon.  For listeners within the Kingston area, the album can be purchased at select shops and music outlets.

Playing for the Runners

posted by amackdma

We have the opportunity to play music along the Ottawa Marathon race route this year on Sunday May 27.  We are very excited for this show because our music will be a vehicle to inspire and cheer on the many folks taking on this physically intense challenge.

I do a reasonable amount of running and races each year myself and run mostly without music playing in my ears from an iphone or ipod.  Naturally it can get a bit dull running without music.  When I'm running I always enjoy hearing music along the race route, it helps me to pick up the pace and it keeps my mind off the various nagging hurts in my body as I run.  To provide this support to the runners is exciting.  It's going to be such an energized show for us because of the charge in the air from the race and from the runners.

Another cool part of this show is the fact that one of our songs, "Love Song for a Runner" is written about running.  It was inspired by my brother who is an ultra-runner.  As a result of his training and remarkable strength he finished the Marathon Des Sables, a 250 km run through the Moroccon desert twice!  I'm looking forward to playing this song during the race to feel the words put into context of an actual race.

I'll keep you posted on the aftermath of the show to see how it compares to the excitement and anticipation that I feel as we practice for this show.  For those of you at the Ottawa Marathon, give us a wave and a smile as you run by, we'll be at Parkdale and Emerson.

Go Runners Go!

Andrew
