biographical info
Sometimes the most inspiring landscapes can be found in your
own backyard. For Vancouver
musicians 41st and Home, inspiration comes from everyday relationships, long
drives and hours spent writing together in a small, carless garage somewhere on
41st avenue.
In early 2011 the band holed themselves away in their
practice space, ignoring the distractions of their university schedules and
went to work crafting the makings of a new EP. In contrast to their debut album
‘Left in Places,’ which took the greater part of a year to finish, this project
was conceived, recorded and mixed in just over a month. Tracked by the group
and mixed by Paul Boechler (of Fadermaster Studios), the upcoming release
showcases the bands transition into more energetic territory; incorporating the
intricate arrangements and rich instrumentation of their earlier work but experimenting
with time signatures, ambience and driving rhythms. The result, to be released
in 2011, is a 6 song collection that evokes sonic comparisons to Arcade Fire,
The National and Broken Social Scene while maintaining its own unique flavor.
Though the current roster is fairly new, the group was
started by drummer Garth Covernton and singer-songwriter Thom Kolb in mid 2008.
Along with bassist and audio engineer George Knuff, the band has matured in
terms of songwriting and instrumentation; experimenting with their sound in
studio and at their practice space. They are joined by a cast of exceptional
musicians such as violinist Sejal Lal, trumpeter Andrew Lee, and keyboard
player Patrick Fiore who provide the songs with intricate and lush
arrangements. From touring across Canada the group has been fortunate
to share the stage with acts such as Said the Whale, Aidan Knight, In Medias
Res and We Are the City and has been featured in publications such as
BeatRoute, Discorder, VancouverIsAwesome, Exclaim! and Youthink. The band was
also one of the top 20 acts in the 2010 Peak Performance Project-an artist
development program spearheaded by Vancouver radio station 100.5 The Peak-and
continue to be played regularly on the station.
You never know what you might come across at one of the
bands shows. The stage is lined with bell kits, various percussion instruments
and oddities such as the 1953 pump organ heard on tracks such as “Sleeper.” The
group continues to evolve and will be performing across the country later in
the year, excited to build their career in the Canadian music scene.
