Electronic and dance music superstar band, Daft Punk, has just released a long awaited new album called Random Access Memories. What makes it especially interesting is that two of the band's key collaborators were 1970s disco legend Nile Rogers and the Godfather of disco himself, Giorgio Moroder.

 

Could it be that disco is undergoing some kind of revival?

Back in the 1970s, a musical revolution was beginning to percolate in a number of cities around the world. As with any successful revolution, this one was a potent cocktail of politics, passion, money and power.

And in this case, there was also dancing.

When disco was born and Montreal was one of the hotspots.

And there was no bigger star than Patsy Gallant. Remember this one?

This week's documentary Funkytown: The Montreal disco era gives the back story to a fascinating - and often overlooked - musical era. It was written and produced by Colin Mackenzie and presented by Patti Schmidt. It features interviews with disco greats Pierre Perpal, Dominique and Michael Zgarka, Patsy Gallant, William Weintraub, Robert Ouimet and Michel Landry.
