The In Concert whistle-stop musical tour of the world continues this week with a sojourn in sunnier climes. From last week's wintry Soviet landscapes, we're pointing our sleuthing ears south and westward to Spain.
Imagine where the world would be musically without Spain. For the past hundred years we have witnessed the unquestioned dominance of the guitar as the king of instruments, especially in the popular sphere. Without the Spanish classical guitar, there would never have been an electric guitar. (And the Spanish guitar, in turn, owes its existence to its Arabic predecessors.) Yes, that's how we draw a line from this to this. All music is related somehow.
This week on In Concert, we're featuring one of the most famous guitar compositions of all time: the Concierto de Aranjuez, by Joaquin Rodrigo. American guitarist Jason Vieaux is the soloist in a performance with the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orchestra and conductor Edwin Outwater.
As with previous editions of our travel-themed quiz, the challenge is straightforward, although not necessarily simple. I've selected three musical examples. The title of each contains the name of a place in Spain.
PLAYYour challenge is to identify the Spanish destinations named in the titles of three musical examples (separated by the sound of a bell).
Don't answer here on the blog. Email your answers to inconcert@cbc.ca. Four correct entrants will win a recently released classical CD.
Last week's quiz took us back to the USSR. The correct answers were Georgia (as in, the Republic of Georgia), from the jazz standard "Georgia on my mind"; Kiev, from "The Great Gate of Kiev", one of the movements in Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition; and the Volga River, from the traditional "Song of the Volga Boatmen."
The winners are Janice Gosnell of Kent Bridge, ON; Sally Lesk of Sudbury, ON; David Green of Edmonton; and Aiden Kleer of Tillsonburg, ON.
