Zooey Deschanel to play Loretta Lynn on Broadway
Zooey Deschanel has been chosen to play Loretta Lynn in the Broadway musical Coal Miner’s Daughter. Lynn made the announcement during a performance at the Grand Ole Opry this week. The musical is based on Lynn’s life story. Deschanel joined Lynn at the Opry show to sing the title tune. No date has been set for the musical’s debut as of yet. The 80-year-old Lynn is currently celebrating 50 years in the music industry.
George “Goober Pyle” Lindsey dies at 83
George Lindsey died at the age of 83 on May 7. Lindsey portrayed the character Goober Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show from 1964 to 1968 and on its successor, Mayberry R.F.D., from 1968 to 1971. He also appeared on Hee Haw from 1971 until 1993. Before becoming an actor, Lindsey had been a science teacher. He held a bachelor degree in bioscience from the University of North Alabama.
Bluegrass musician Everett Lilly dies at 87
Everett Lilly, a bluegrass music icon from West Virginia, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 87. Lilly played the mandolin, and his brother Bea played guitar. The two performed with Don Stover on banjo. Lilly had also performed with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs. The Lilly Brothers and Stover were inducted into the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame in 2002 and the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame in 2008.
Ed Helms is working on his first album
Ed Helms, best known for his role as Andy on the TV show The Office, is now working on his first album with his band Lonesome Trio, according to an exclusive in The Hollywood Reporter. They perform bluegrass music and play original material. Now, the trio’s about to embark on recording an album for release to the public. In the past, they have only made recordings for their family and friends.
Lynyrd Skynyrd sets August 21 for new album release
Called Last of a Dying Breed, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s new album will be the band’s first studio disc since 2009. It’s scheduled for release on August 21. The band has embarked on a tour through North America and Europe.
Lionel Richie scores platinum with Tuskegee
Lionel Richie has sold over a million copies of Tuskegee in five weeks, qualifying the disc for platinum status by the Recording Industry Association of America. Tuskegee sat at the top of the Billboard 200 chart for all genres, for two weeks. On the Billboard Country Albums chart, Tuskegee was number one for four weeks. Richie now joins Ray Charles as the only artist to ever top both the Billboard Country Albums and the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. Tuskegee features Richie singing duets on his hits with artists like Shania Twain, Kenny Chesney and Blake Shelton.
Carrie Underwood’s Blown Away knocks Lionel Richie and Jack White from charts
Carrie Underwood’s fourth album, Blown Away, has replaced Lionel Richie’s Tuskegee at number one on the Billboard Country Albums chart. The disc has also displaced Jack White’s Blunderbuss on the Billboard 200 chart. Underwood is taking her Blown Away tour to Australia at the end of June. Her North American tour launches Sept. 14 in Manchester, N.H.
Indy 500 will have Martina McBride to sing the anthem
Martina McBride has been invited to sing the American national anthem at this year’s Indy 500 race. According to her website, McBride says it’s a huge honour for her. The race is scheduled for May 27.
