First the good, regular news: It’s Fresh Friday, meaning we play all the new tracks coming to the CBC Radio 3 playlist. And now the Weird News: It’s Tour Diary Friday, too. The week kind of got away from me, but I wanted to get it all in.

I’ll be checking in with Whistler’s finest hip hop duo Animal Nation. Garnet Clare and Mike Armitage are good friends of ours here at R3. Fans of my Extended Play podcast might even remember the make over episode that starred these fine artists. You can see their progress here.

We’ll catch up today as they embark on a Fresh Tour.

Btw, interesting article above.  I assume that people in the downtowns of big citiesare still walking, and young people are driving less, so I guess it’s the suburbanites and rural folk who are driving a lot more?  I’ve heard that the downtowns in small towns are dying and more people are driving to Walmartsand regional box store shopping centres.

True, but whatever the reason they’re still driving less,so some other group must be driving more to account for the fact that Americans as a whole are walking less, unless there’s been a big enough spike in public transit usage.  Lisa’s article also talks about walking as a pastime.  People used to go out for walks in the evening to the park, or just around the neighbourhood, a lot more.  Now I guess they’re staying in and surfing the net.

Canada hasn't had the housing bubble implode (yet), spike in unemployment and decline in incomes/wealth effect that triggers a lot of the ugliness that has happened here. After my visit to Vancouver, I'm quite worried about you guys, to be honest. I hope I'm wrong.

Student loans, the price of higher education, and the myth that everyone is entitled to and will benefit from a college degree will cost us a generation of economic growth. People with 6 figure student loan balances (that don't go away in bankruptcy) don't buy new cars, delay buying their first house, etc. It sets off a chain reaction that will dampen aggregate demand for many years.

Neither candidate has any fiscal ideas that hold any water. Most can't comphrehend the tax increases and spending cuts that need to be made to balance the budget much less cut the deficit. Obama could raise the tax rate to 100% on incomes past a million dollars and it would barely close 1/8 of the projected deficit - assuming no one found a tax shelter.

A single payer health care system like Canada’s wouldsave the US about $1 trillion per year.  Thatwouldn’t happen right away, of course, because there would be some transitioncosts, but your current system is enormously wasteful.  I can dig up an OECD chart if you’d like tosee it.  Also, rebuilding yourinfrastructure now makes a lot of sense and would boost the economy.  The Reps. would say, “more debt!” but this isexactly the right time to be borrowing and spending that infrastructure.  It’s going to have to be done sooner orlater, and money is cheap now, and labour and materials are cheap now.  If you wait you’ll pay more.

It’s not counterintuitive if you think about it.  Having multiple companies each with their ownhead offices, CEOs, and bureaucracy greatly increases the money spent onoverhead overall.  Also, if you have asingle player system where everyone is insured then there aren’t any courtcases, and associated costs, fighting about whether an insurance company has topay.  In Canada if you’re a citizen you’reentitled to coverage, period.  No courtcases and no court costs.

@ fast; that's the theory that suggests communism works too, but when delivering cars or clothes efficiently good ol' capitalism seems to work the best.

I think one key is health care is usually needed under duress, so you can't "shop around" the same way you can for other things.

The other key is "negative selection".  Basically the people that don't need health insurance (young, healthy) don't buy it and the people that really need it try to buy lots.  The insurance companies can't win.  Gotta get those young healthy people to put in a few bucks into the health infrastructure.

Health care con't

On freedom of choice, you may well have more choice in the Canadian system as well.  You can choose any doctor you want, provided he/she has room for you.  You can go to any hospital, because they’re all covered by the same system.  You have the choice to buy extra insurance that would pay for a private room in a hospital, or other things not covered by our basic health care.  You can even pay extra for certain extra services at deluxe clinics.

It’s not just theory. It’s why all single payer systems are much cheaper than the US system, which is by far the most expensive while still leaving something like 30% ofthe population without coverage.  I’ll dig up that OECD chart for you.  There is still competition in the Canadian system, however, because each province runs its own system. They’re not in direct competition, but they watch what each other and learn from each other.

The Pack AD are awesome live. I've never seen Japandroids, but their new stuff has me very excited.

@110 uh, yeah...I'm not going on that type of vacation. I'm actually flying my plane up to NorCal to spend the weekend with a shiny new g/f.

it's funny because i just brought up the main music.cbc.ca site, and saw you in the "other members are listening to .." panel.   sometimes i'll watch it for a few minutes to see if i'll recognize any login names ..
