Another day, another public fight between two artists. But what makes this one different is the combatants: Madonna and Deadmau5. I mean, in a million years I could not imagine a more bizarre duo or issue.
Joel Zimmerman, aka Deadmau5, takes issue with Madonna exclaiming at a concert “How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?” a slang reference to the drug MDMA, and that also being the inspiration behind her new album title, MDNA.
He explains he’s not pro or anti drug use, but more responsibility, and making drug references to impressionable young people is irresponsible, in his opinion. And that is, as we’ve heard before – because Madonna is a role model.
I guess never mind that Madonna is an adult and a mother and should really be past the club drug days, this discussion that ended up on twitter brought up this thorny of thorny subjects again, and that being:
SHOULD ENTERTAINERS BE ROLE MODELS?
WHAT ROLE CAN ARTISTS PLAY IN THE WORLD?
I always find this a tricky subject, that being the separation of artist from their art. But the fact that it never goes away tells me we do at least have some expectations.
