This is it, the last Friday of March. I forgot all about bewaring ides, but I guess it all turned out. Anyway, it’s time for Fresh Friday, all the new music coming to the R3 playlist.

On today's show I'll be joined by Halifax band Cousins. They were one of the many Canadian bands to make a great impression at SXSW. We'll catch up.

And also as promised, I’ll also got some prizes – Yukon Blonde’s new cd – to give away. The band are out on tour celebrating their Tiger Talk release. I spent a goodly amount of time coming up with a fun contest and decided this:

WHAT WOULD BE THE HARDEST THING ABOUT TAKING A TIGER OUT ON TOUR?

Bonus points for working in The Life Of Pi or William Blake. I'll pick a winner by the end of the show and you may just get some real mail!

Oooh Cousins! Right on!

Also, as it's Fresh Friday, I heard Wintersleep has a new tack out but it isn't on their page and I haven't heard it yet... would you play it, Lisa?

Man you know how cats claw the furniture, can't imagine what a tiger could do to the seats in a van.  Ever tried to clip a cat's nails?  You'd need a mighty big towel to wrap up that kitty.

I have a feeling that the expense of feeding the thing would be prohibitive.  Plus, all the roofies you'd have to invest in to keep it calm a la the first "Hangover" flick.  on the upside, you could get Ed Helms to come along & sing "What Would TIgers Dream Of". & he plays banjo, which could be useful to bands

What would be the hardest thing about taking a tiger out on tour?

Well, first off you would need an 18-wheeler along with your tour van. That truck would have to be packed full of gazelles.

Of course, you'd need to feed the gazelles, too. I would suggest the tour only really take place across the Prairies or American Great Plains so you don't have to worry about bringing another 18-wheeler just to feed the gazelles...

Then again, if you're travelling the Prairies then if you ever let the tiger off leash, say to hunt a gazelle, you're never going to find it again. The stripes are designed to disguise it in long grass.

You could always ask Seigfried and Roy for advice... Then again, there was that attack...

No! I've got it! The worst thing about touring with a tiger would be...

... The Bouncing.

Because a wonderful thing is a Tigger;

A Tigger's a wonderful thing.

Their tops are made out of rubber,

their bottoms are made out of spring.

Taking a tiger on tour would be hard. They are fearfully symmetrical (that was lame).

For the average band, buying a vehicle large enough to take a tiger on the road would beggar them. You'd need space for the tiger to roam around, and space for he band and their gear. At minimum you'd need a huge tour bus. So, you've got yourself a new tour bus, and you'd need to modify most of it for the sweet tiger pen you'd build (you'd need a sweet tiger pen). This pen would need to be pretty sturdy, adding to the cost. Tigers like to play, so you'd need to buy toys as well. It would be very expensive. Not to mention tiger food.

For tiger food, you'd just offer to show some groupies  your sweet tiger tour bus, then let them into the tiger pen, and your tiger food would be taken care of. This may bring you legal problems, but it would be worth it to have a tiger. We'd call him Shere Khan.

WHAT WOULD BE THE HARDEST THING ABOUT TAKING A TIGER OUT ON TOUR?

I think the question should be reversed - What would be the BEST thing about having a tiger out on tour?

Well, first you should give the tiger a suitable name... when Bubbles from the Trailer Park Boys adopted a cougar, he named it Steve because of his little french mustache. It would depend on the tiger for the name I would give it but based on the one in the blog photo, I'd name him Junior, as he takes after his father (me).

Having a tiger on tour would also be great because let's say if you are a band, and the promoter screws you over, just lure 'em out back to the van where Junior would be waiting to....intimidate....

Also, I have a feeling that Junior would be a sensational hit with the ladies, so, as a dude in a band not only do you have that going for you but now you have a tiger!

Instead of putting a bird on it (your merch) You could put Junior the Tiger on it (your merch). Instant Hot Seller!

And finally, when everything's all said and done and Junior is retired and your band has 4 gold records, he'll write a tell all memoir that shows the human side of the band that the fans don't get to see... stuff like taking the tiger out for a poop at 3 am, giving the tiger the rest of your steak sandwhich even though you've only had one bite so far....

Yes, I think having a tiger on tour could only be a good thing.

I was just perusing National Geographic (not for tigers though) and I read this passage about the why the Titanic's sinking has captured the imagination of people to this day...

" It took two hours and 40 minutes for the Titanic to sink, just long enough for 2,208 tragic-epic performances to unfold, with the ship’s lights blazing ......The captain stayed at the bridge, the band played on, the Marconi wireless radio operators continued sending their distress signals until the very end. The passengers, for the most part, kept to their Edwardian stations. How they lived their final moments is the stuff of universal interest, a danse macabre that never ends."

From Wikipedia, about Curling (which I'm going to do some tonight and tomorrow):

"It is also traditional for the winning team to buy the losing team a drink after the game.[24] This is often referred to as the Spirit of Curling. This tradition is in contrast to the games of darts where the loser traditionally buys the winner a drink by way of congratulations."

I can get behnd that, especially since I have a feeling we'll be doing a lot more losing than winning.

Have a great weekend people. Ciao.

The problem with the Junos is not just that they’re cheesy either.  The biggest problem is that they’re essentially a modern day payola scheme that nominates and awards a hugely disproportionate number of bands from Toronto, primarily bands with industry connections, I suspect.  For example, there are probably at least twice as many nomination worthy bands from Montreal, and probably more from Vancouver as well, but Toronto has twice as many nominations as Montreal, and six times as many as Vancouver.  No one was talking about Toronto bands at SXSW, for example, at least not in a positive way (see the Arkels), but Montreal was being called the new Brooklyn.  And yet at the Junos you’ll see a never ending parade of mediocre Toronto bands.  The Junos tell you nothing about the true state of the Canadian music scene.

Have a good weekend Lisa!

I’m out.
