I need to preface this next comment with a comment that I love this site, and the music and everything else, and I'm glad that the complaint got shut down.

Idon't think that the basis of the complaint against the CBC was wrong (except for the part where the CRTC clarified that the CBC doesn't get preferential fees etc).  On the face of it, a government funded organization (yes yes, underfunded, funding slashed etc but STILL government funded) got into the same business as a private corporation and they felt that it wasn't fair.  I think they have every right to complain about it, and I'm glad that it went through the process and got shut down.

Now please re-read the second paragraph of my post.

i spent the weekend being a savage in the bush at what we call HEMPFEST up north of sault ste marie. this year it was pretty tame compared to ususal... only 500 hippies trippin out in the great out doors. fyi best thing to bring camping = full sized trampoline that will forever be refered to as a lounge-oline. 

Let the record show that I moved to Toronto just in time to vote against Mr. Ford...although my measly one vote wasn't enough to hold off the suburban hordes. 

@FT from way back there a hip hop show won't entice me to go home for the weekend. I've got a field party to throw here anyway.

Blog -  I only hump the smartests of people so based on what ya'll are saying, no humping of the FOrd for me.

Ford makes me happy that Calgary by some crazy miracle elected the best mayor ever! Go NENSHI! Also, he makes this face. It's the best.

I'm probably going to be ostracized for this, but I think a one-term Ford government is good for Toronto. He's shaken things up and forced the left to regroup and rethink, I think it has gotten too complacent. I don't believe he can fundamentally damage the city in a short span, especially since he only has one vote on council. Resetting the bar, even with a fool, is important sometimes. I think the expansion of the subways will be a positive legacy, and if he gets around to his bike network of off-street bike lanes that'll be great too. I'll leave it there, but I don't think the sky is falling.

@laurita: can you and I please enjoy the tam tams together at least once before you leave us for Ontari-ari-ar-o?

It was funny, Team Canada was actually staying in the same hotel as I was and I ended up on the elevator wiyth a bunch of them at one point. I wanted to be like "OMGZ U GUYZ PLAY FOR CANADA" and then I relilized I was 5 years older than all of them.

Why do all WordPress themes suck?!

@ Ben: actually, we really didn't have many problems with Water street; this was when we were on our way to Youngfolk and the Kettle Black (yes, I wrote down a list of R3 suggestions). University Ave, however, was in fine D-Bag form. We were catcalled at all hours of the day and night, in various states of dress (most of them as in the photo I've got here). We were catcalled more in those 4 days than we've ever been in our lives.

I have an older 3G usb modem (sierra wireless) for my internet because I am cheap and get 5GB/month for $30. Can't justify/afford $60+/month for line-of-sight high speed internet. I guess my first project should be to get that usb modem working. And yes I still need to secure a powered usb hub. Thanks for the OS link. I will download and try it out. I have raspbmc but have not tried it yet.

Unusually Instrumentation

Any song is allowed provided it features something out of the ordinary. Kazoo, sitar, kalimba, pedal steel (maybe?), glockenspiel, steel drums, penny whistle... Basically anything outside the standars (guitar, bass, drums, synth, keys, banjo, piano, sax, trumpet, violin, etc.)

*it has nothing to do with just how well he captains my dreamboat, sir. Honestly, have you seen justified? it's so awesome! He's fantastic in it! and I would argue his stoic performance in deadwood helped set the tome for the entire series as well. But again, just my opinion.

Bengineer - like I said, I live in the boon sticks. Internet options are few and expensive. The rates for usb modems are pricey because of the portability of them I guess. My cell phone plan has 1GB/ month and I can use my phone as wifi hotspot so I plan on trying to use that method to get the pi connected to the internet once I get a powered usb hub.

@ Binsy - I listen almost exclusively to independant Canadian music, attend shows when they come my way, support Canadian indie music by buying their music, interact fellow R3 bloggers (a little less than most regulars), answer blog topic questions (mostly), and have gone out of my way to meet Grant Lawerence when he came to Kamloops on his book tour. I've been a member of R3 since before the launch of the basement when it was called newmusiccanada.ca I've downloaded and listened to just about every R3 podcast ever put out (since Podcast #1). R3 holds a big piece of my heart and definitly contributes to who I am today. I gleen knowledge and useless (sometimes informative) information from fellow R3 bloggers every day. There is a deep sense of community from having a presence on the blog. R3 people are generally very helpful if someone asks a question. Usually if I ask a question on the blog, I get a more useful, context appropriate response then say if I used google.

@TheRadioHead [412] - The entire comment made me laugh. Mostly because I grew up in Kitchener-Waterloo, ON - the birthplace of roundabouts in Ontario (Canada?) - and everyone there complains about them so much. It's great. I think they're awesome, to be honest.

Oh man, they love traffic circles here.  In silly spots.  I have been tempted to sign up for the Canadian Traffic Engineering Journal (whatever it is called) and start collected papers regarding the proper places for traffic circles and how traffic cirlces are deadly for pedistrians.  I would photo copy all of them and then send them to the City Engineer in an unmarked envelope.

They also love to put school zones on major throughfares here too.  I'm pretty sure that Whitehorse is where city planners come to make their mistakes before they go elsewhere.

@astorr I know right.  Have you ever been in there in daylight?  Its weird. 

I grew up in Steelton, the hub of all those crazy italians - the old widows that wander around in black and jabber away in italian and have no idea what you are saying to them.  They also live in the attic of their son's house.

@JonDixon, put over 1000 kms on a rental in England this year, I have driven in Sweden as well.  They are so much better roads there.  In Sweden you ride you scooter on a special bike lane next to the regular bike lane.  Winnipeg needs that b/c the redneck factor on the roads is a little much for little vehicles / bikes.  Ah well, that might change.

@Brenda I love those little traffic circles. When I am in the truck I am always tempted to drive right through the middle.

@mafia how about Edmonton style traffic lights inside the roundabout?  Or like they do here, a pedistrian controlled light on one entrance to the traffic circle, with a crossing guard who wanders out into the traffic circle the instant someone needs to get through it.  Crossing a 70 km/h max speed road that connects several subdivisions to the downtown core.  The reason they must cross this artery is to get to the superbly placed school, on the other side of the all the development.

They certainly can work with high volumes, if done correctly, Canada isn't ready for that quite yet.

RE #442 - Alberta does crazy things, I'm based in BC so more familiar with design standards here and with federal standards, Alberta does it's own thing that doesn't really make much sense. The signal ones are likely older ones when Canada was trying to figure out how to do them correctly, or it's a traffic circle (yes they are different from a roundabout). For a while the US had stop signs for traffic entering the circle (or signals) and Canada copies a lot that the US does traffic wise, so that's likely where it came from. That's not normal practice nowadays though.
