Ever since seeing Festival Express when I was a kid, jumping on a musical train has sounded like a fantastic adventure to me.

I nominate the lovely Crissi Cochrane for next year's Tracks On Tracks. And Loon Choir, of course.

Festival Express is like an old ghost that still haunts the Canadian psyche.

@binsy - My letter to VIA Rail was entirely positive and encouraging - that this should be repeated, and most of the ToT participants had never been on a train before - a new experience, and was exposure for future VIA Rail passengers.  (I had descripted as the normal clientele of the Canadian as having the age group of "retired".)  I also praised several members of the VIA Rail staff, especially Josepehine, our "hostess" out of Vancouver, and was filmed dancing while Shred Kelley was playing in the baggage car in Melville!  Great lady, and kept this all together!

The response was equally positive, thanking me for my appreciation, and showing appreication that their staff handled this so well.  Everything good!

Anna, absolutely! That first train tour set the bar very highly! We all grow upp wanting our own pivotal moment like that one!

@binsy - Precisely.  They were happy in the response, but this was really "cutting edge" for them, taking the "iconic" and stately Canadian, usually populated with people about 70 years old, and filling it was rock and rollers?  Could have been a disaster, something I initally feared, but the whole operation was handled so fantasically, and the ToT people were so great, it turned out better than I ever imagined it could - and I let VIA Rail know that this can work - and it can work to their benefit.  They appreciated hearing that.

I do have some suggestions, mainly that the discount code gets you the maximum discount without waiting for any sale, and that the code places you in the sleepers near the ToT car, not scattering us all over the train.

@ Janes: funny story: one time  when I was like 10, my mom's crown fell out...and she swallowed it by mistake. The dentist didn't want to make her another (for some reason that never became clear) and so they made my mom go toilet bowl diving for it. and she got it. and they sterilized it. and put it back in her mouth.

she was embarrassed; I, being 10, thought it was the single funniest thing I'd ever seen.

My only problem with sleeping in the single room (roomette) was that I'm about two inches too tall for the bed, and I had to wrap a towel in the pillowcase to make it small enough that it didn't leave me with a stiff neck.  But then again, I'm an old pro sleeping in beds on trains.

I had braces and several different 'applicances' as they were called (a pendex, which was torture, and a herbst, which is what they do now instead of headgear). glad that's over. yikes. but after a while I had a system whenever I got a new thing in or anything was tightened etc:

the first day: mouth in shock, not exactly in pain; kinda weird.

second day: torture, PAAAAIN, Motrin is your friend. soup and ice cream and jello time.

third day: able to eat softer things like peanut butter sandwiches.

fourth day: hazard larger bites.

fifth day: I LOVE FOOOODD!

@soop: 14 years later, it still doesn't sound overly appealing. But I should suck it up sometime I guess..

I had head gear as a teenager, but only need to wear it at night.  Every month I had to go in and get brackets put back on my molars though, so I 'm not sure how well it all worked.

@laurita - It was at Peake's Quay in 2003, that the journey to CBC Radio3 began, seeing the Halifax cover band, Boys Next Door perform.  That started a reaction that I was astonished to discover that good music was still being made!  And its from Canada!

When my boyfriend and I watched Portage and Main play at Trinity-Bellwoods, he leaned over and whispered to me, "Remember the episode of Family Guy where Peter has a nest of birds living in his beard?"

It made me laugh.

I've got pretty much the same experience as Christine.

The bridge/mouth-widener thing (I hated that so much), braces, elastics, headgear and at least two retainers at various times.

Plus wisdom teeth out, a root canal, a chipped front tooth (that wouldn't stay fixed for about two years) and now a gold crown that has fallen out.

@marie I'll apologize for that one (331) - he was (trying to) annoy me...

I got braces (and glasses) between elementary school and high school. Though I don't really have any horror stories...

I got my wisdom teeth out, and on the way home we stopped to get a milkshake, because i couldn't have solid food... I drank the entire thing and got home to a message from my mom, who was at work (as a dental assistant) saying not to drink anything through a straw, cos the suction could rip out the stitches.

has anyone ever had a Pendex appliance? looks just like the jaw widener but you don't crank it.it was stuck to me via two metal rings that fitted over one molar on either side of my mouth. the metal rings had, on their outside, jagged lumps of metal that stuck into the insides of my upper mouth and made me bleed.

to the best of my knowledge, there was no reason for them to be there.

in other news ROSE COUSINS IS THE BEST!!!  (in case you all weren't sick of hearing me say that)

@ Blog:I chipped  a tooth when I was 10 when a soccer ball was kicked and smacked me square in the mouth. it's a teeny chip on the corner, but every dentist I've been to freaks out when they see it like I'm some gross freak of nature. "Um...you've got this chip on your tooth? were you aware? it's not a straight corner like the one next to it, do you want it to be fixed??"

I'm late & just saw all the stuff about Nudies so sorry if this is a repeat. they're called that because it was the guy's name. who started making them for Gram Parson/Burrito Bros & Porter Waggoner & Elvis & the like. He was Russian so it's possibly a shortened verison of an impossible first name but I don't know it. (his last name is Cohn)

The business was taken over by his son-in-law Manuel, which is does them now. that's where the Rodeo Kings suits are from & they are even in the Manuel book. so depending on how 'vintage' is, it could be either.

Manuel's main shop is in NAshville but Nudie's big enterprise was out here in LA - on Lankersheim Ave in NoHo.

re: scissors... I was trying to cut off a plastic wristband with dull scissors. the blowback when they finally cut resulted in scissors flying into my face. cut my chin and my lip. - it's more amusing when you see my live reinactment... also at the time i yelled "REALLY?!"
