First off, Happy Independence Day to our American listeners!

Over the past few days, the "celeb watching" news reports have reached critical mass on celebrating stars for doing things that thousands of people do every day. For example...

:: Adele expecting a baby
:: Anderson Cooper comes out
:: Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes to divorce
:: Justin Bieber graduates from high school

I'm not a crank. Honest. But lots of women have babies, lots of people come out, lots and lots of couples get divorced, and lots of people graduate. And when it comes to celebrities doing these things, lots and lots and lots of people care!

Our fascination with celebrity gossip could be triggered by simply being bored with our own lives or it could signal something even more serious.

Evolutionary psychologist, Dr. Charlotte De Backer, wrote her PhD thesis on obsession with celebrity gossip. In in she wrote, “it is widely known for humans that chocolate stimulates the release of endorphins, and therefore eating chocolate stimulates feelings of happiness. Gossip is [also] an instant stimulator of endorphins.”

Could it really be that simple? What do you think? Are you a celeb-watcher? Why, or why not? Are there any Canadian indie artists that we elevate to this status?

Here's R3's attempt at celeb-ing it up, from the 2007 Polaris Prize Gala.
