ooooh! I just got back from a dear friend's wedding in PEI! It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed, no joke.And I'd secondthat call for 'I'm So Glad.' I'd also put in Sarah Slean's "My Eyes And Your Eyes."

The first dance song at Grant's wedding was "Night Windows" by the Weakerthans. There is no reason for me to know that, but I think of it everytime that song comes up on my playlist.

I got married about 2 months ago! Our first dance song was "Falling Slowly" by Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. It won the Oscar for best original song the year the movie Once came out. I would recommend that movie if you love music :)

A Million Dollars - Joel Plaskett

It's more a group song than a first dance song, but it's still sweet. It talks about getting drunk and escaping the day-to-day doldrums as lovers. What better way to celebrate feelings?

I actually have a dream to surprise by future husband at my reception by choreographing and lip-syncing a routine to this song.

On marriage and music: big tip, its really your wife's mom's wedding, so nix any plans on having 'your' music :) Actually we had a live band that was really good, typical classic rock, cover band, and my old bandmates and I, even got to go up on stage and play a bit, it was amazing.

Really you are so busy talking to people that you dont really get to enjoy the music so dont sweat it if you dont get great music, just be happy and know that you will have the rest of your life to go see music with your spouse.

@Grant: what an excellent choice (Night Windows!)--I feel like some would have trouble dancing to it, but not this cowboy.

RE BLOG QUESTION: I am unmarried, but I think "Safe and Sound" by Hawksley Workman would be a great choice. I've been told I'm prohibited from using it, however, as a good friend of mine did in 2010 and I need ot be more "original".

I attended a wedding this past weekend. Apparently, Indian food, an open bar and poor self control are an awful combo. Beautiful wedding, though.

Hey Folks!

On wedding music, a friend recently got married on Saltspring, and had Geoff Berner play. We joked about having him sing the official 2010 Olympics song – he said it was a bit too dated to play. The music was great, but it was the most non-political set I had ever seen. Guess fuck the police doesn't go well with everyone's extended familly.

We went pretty hard into the night, and ended up sleeping at the rented hall. Then came 4am, when the two guys came to pick up the PA – who does that? But that’s another story.

But as for the first dance, they really should have gone with: The Way That Girl Drinks Beer!

i might choose cub's New York City as my first dance, for goofy sentimental reasons.

Fiasco22 should definitely have a version of the bird dance (chicken dance?) at his wedding. yes it's silly, yes it's cliche, yes it's traditional, but these are not reasons to exclude it. it would be nice if we had a modern canadian indie version though. or a punk rock version.

Also, Justin Rutledge Don't Be So Mean, Jellybean also for goofy sentimental reasons.

Then, a metric ass tonne of party rock. You can try to waltz to it if you like.

I have made MANY wedding slideshows with my photos for couples... most of them include songs by Vancouverites:

Dan Mangan's - Not What You Think It Is ...for one and You Silly Git for another.

Said The Whale's - Howe Sounds for one and Love Is Art / Sleep Through Fire for another

Hannah Georgas' - Something For You (<<<<< that'd be a GREAT first dance song)

Nat Jay's - Daydreaming (a couple saw this video and asked to used it for THEIR first dance song)

ooo and Matt Epp's - This Old House (that's a good one)

Antenna by The Acorn - also really good!

Also, I helped made one that used When I Get Grown by Treelines... once that came out people called into the peak said they changed their weddings songs they loved it that much.

I'm not into marriage at all. I believe some lucky people do meet and connect in a way that they can never cope with being apart, but I think those are rarer than we would like to believe. That and I think weddings are too flashy and self-involved affairs. They're too heavily planned and too carefully structured to be any fun.

I met your lovely wife Jill at her show in Mississauga on Friday. The event was well attended, mostly an older crowd.

I got Jill to autograph her book which I bought for my grandson Logan, and I enjoyed talking to her and listening to her music.

@ Blog: I really don't have many shining examples of happy marriages around me, but I'm still willing to be convinced (I think). My friends' wedding was totally DIY (the bride and her sisters made us all cupcakes, for example) and it was by the ocean, and the two families actually seemed happy to be joining together. that and the way the couple held each other. 'twas pretty dang nice, gatta say!

One wedding we did a few months ago (at a Chinese restaurant in Ottawa). I think it was the bride's little sister, as she was excited for our lion dance troupe to have us perform. It's nice to see some enthusiasm from a younger generation. :)

I think if I ever get married, I'd want my first dance to be Chances by Jill Barber. It seems I always get into relationships in really random ways and often think "Wow... what are the chances" so I imagine it would be the perfect song.

I've MC'd three weddings now, it's pretty fun and apparently I did well enough the first go 'round I got asked to do it again. The hot tip is to keep it succinct, nobody likes listening to a story that drags on and on...and on... keep it light and remember the focus shouldn't be on the mc, it should be on the married people.

I heard a joke this weekend that's good for all age groups -

@Grant - Owen Sound has a Folk Festival called Summerfolk , that goes on from August 17-19. You should be able to pick up some nice smoked Whitefish, Lake Trout or Chubb(Arctic Char) at one of the local markets if you are interested.

My husband and I danced to the Tony Bennet version of "The Way You Look Tonight", but for me our "unofficial" weding song was when we danced to 'Home for a Rest" by Spirit of the West. It was the end of the night, and we were still out there dancing a littel jig.

A dear friend of mine sang "The Power of Two" by The Indigo Girls at our ceremony, which was a very special moment for so many reasons!!

My Husband and I danced to "Follow" by Micheal Bernard Fitzgerald on July 7th! It was the perfect song for our first dance as Husband and Wife. Our Ceremony was followed by a hand crafted Cbc music playlist! If there is one thing I think that is important in a wedding, it is music that reflects the personality of that couple. My wife and I actually had a pretty special first dance song, we had the acoustic version of Big Blue Wave by Hey Ocean that the band provided us with (it's an unreleased song).

We also walked into the hall to Ready to Start by Arcade Fire and my wife walked down the "aisle" (it was outside) to Metric.

Got a lot of compliments on the music and a few people who were familiar with Hey Ocean were pretty caught off guard by the song, they had never heard the acustic version before. Made for a pretty special dance.

@Zammy - The discovery apparently has implications for people suffering from Macular Degeneration, which is the #1 cause of blindness. Also Retinitus Pigmentosa may be positively impacted by the discovery.
