14... so I would have been in grade 8 at the time... I was a dorky kid (as opposed to the dorky adult I am now) and I was probably still listening to a lot of Green Day (Nimrod) and Offspring (Ixnay On The Hombre) as well as Weird Al. I am also pretty sure at that time I had switched from listening to Z95 to The Fox, back when it was still good and worth listening to. 

I think I was just getting in to alt rock, and more and more cancon, so that was definitely a starting point to where my musical tastes are today.

Of course, don’t forget to describe what your were wearing at the time.

Probbaly jeans and nerdy t-shirts. Which is, uh, more or less what I wear today....

A stellar year for music, it was. 

my prized posession was the bright yellow walkman that i stuffed with supertramp, genesis and peter gabriel as well as eurythmics and stevie wonder.  there was some local emerging talent that i checked out like bryan adams and of course i could not escape my mom's folk like simon and garfunkle,  joni mithcel and joan armatrading.

What were you like at 14 years old?

I feel like I was funnier then than I am now. I was less-than-svelte so I had to be funny.  Not yet in high school (it starts at gr. 10 here). Started playing lacrosse --> great call.

This is when I first got in to hip hop, admittedly, because that's what the cool kids were listening to. The shocker? I started to like it. Really like it. I can distinctly remember listening to the Grammy Rap Nominees CD and thinking it was the greatest thing ever. There was also some can-con in there--with Maestro and the Rascalz showing me that Canucks can rap as well as anyone. 

What were you wearing? 

I think this would have been just near the end of the Tommy Hilfiger era for young me. In an attempt to impress a girl (or two) I felt the need to drape myself in all things Tommy (wow, that sounds awfully shallow...and it was). Oh yeah, and Polo Sport cologne. I can't help but drift back to the past when I catch a whiff of that stuff. 

This was also the era when I started with the short-ish spikey/messy haircut...which I only abandoned in the past year or so. It was a good run. 

Among many others, I remember Naughty by Nature coming out with OPP and having it thrown in the trash when my parents heard the language.  I was devasted!

Love this song. Was on a mix a friend made for me in Grade 10 or 11. So not quite 14, but more or less.

 Painfully shy. . Could not do public speaking or anything of the kind. at all. If my 14 year old self had gotten wind of the fact that I went on to get a theatre degree, she would have laughed hysterically.  If she'd be brave enough to. Crazy fit though, from all the Highland Dance. a teensy weensy quiet wannabe tank.

What were you listening to?

I think I was still trying to figure out what 'my' music was. My parents raised me on a lot of their old '60's/'70's records (rock n' roll, The Band, Jesse Winchester, Motown etc.) But then I discovered Ani Difranco and that was the beginning of the descent into hardcore folk/roots music, which is still happening.

What were you wearing?

Really didn't give much of a hoot , but mostly hoodies. baggy hoodies and jeans and ponytails. Think stereotypical 'tomboy' but with long hair, and everything was green.

@Chopz - Oh! Hahaha! Yeah, I totally didn't catch on to that. :P My bad!

I am pretty sure I was very similar to current Carly, I think. I talked a lot, laughed often, smiled, and listened to a lot of music. Coolest kid ever!

I was all about Green Day and Our Lady Peace. Mainly a lot of punk rock though. There was also a lot of Mom and Dad influences thrown in there... I am pretty sure I discovered the awesomeness of Bob Dylan at about that age.

What were you wearing? 

Jeans and band t-shirts... probably oversized black band t-shirts. In the summer before I turned 15, I decided to shave my head for no other reason than it was incredibly hot outside and I had a lot of hair. I had a buzz cut for quite awhile after. It was a terrible look.... only because people kept thinking I was a boy. I was pretty sure the reason was because my boobs weren't big enough (mainly I said this because it made my mother roll her eyes at me... yes, I was that kind of 14 year old).

Yes.  I love hooks.  That and the fact it started a trend I have of finding new music.  I absolutely love hearing songs on CBCR3 and other indie stations, researching, and listening to new music constantly.  Hungry for Hooks!

I was terribly awkward and too busy doing math to care about what was going on in school. I was obsessed with airplanes, and I was in the process of beginning to despise ice hockey.

What were you listening to?

Sum 41, Blink 182, Green Day, Rammstein, Jive Kings, random CDs from my parents' classical/jazz collection, a smattering of U2 and Coldplay thrown in, and that's about it. 

What were you wearing?

Khaki pants, cargo shorts, boat shoes or skate shoes, polo shirts, my dad's old wind-up sailing watch with a yellow ten minute timer. I loved that watch until the day the strap broke and it smashed on the marble floor of the Senate rear hallway. We couldn't afford the $300 repair bill.

When I was 14, it was 1982.  So I was pretty much feeling the Rains down in Africa, and doing the Safety Dance a lot...

But other than listening to AM Top 40 on the radio - because that's what all the cool kids did back then, I also raided my older brother's music.  He would have been 22 then, and away at university.  So whatever music he didn't take with him became mine.  [evil laugh].  At age 13 and 14 I listened to A LOT of old Beatles, and a variety of 70's stuff he'd left behind, notably, CS&N, ABBA, ELO, (was everything an acronym??) Steely Dan.  I think my brother's taste definitely influenced mine, since he was my main source of "cassette tapes" for my "faux walkman". 

@Lana - I believe that you also worked for CFNY as well, in more recent years, although I had probably moved on by then.

When I was 14 one of the biggest albums was eTom Petty's Full Moon Fever and to this day I still rock that album proudly!

Smallie - I still rock the wallet chain but mostly because without the chain I would lose my wallet.

@smallie - My brother still rocks the wallet chain but only for practical reasons. He also hides the chain so it's there, you just can't see the lameness. Heh! Try it out! :)

Easier to think about what I was doing: had just gotten my first real job, making pizzas for $1.65/hour. Learning guitar. Playing piano. Experimenting with... stuff.

Um, it was 1975 when I was 14. Nuff said. I remember my choir group performing Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

@ Smallie-awwww no! but wallet chains are so handy! I used to have this little fist-sized purse shaped like a pair of denim shorts that held my money (didn't have cards yet) that clipped onto my belt loop, with a bright orange, plastic clip. my friends begged me to get rid of it. I thought it was awesome and held onto it for like 3 years. 

I could be wrong, but I think by 14 I had developed my high school style:

-classic mid-90's style from VV's, with WAY to big pants help up with belt, teany tiny t-shirt from childrens section, and chunky skate shoes or knock-off doc martins

-Obsession with Brit pop and Select magazine

-Devotion to The End radio station out of Seattle

-Trying to figure out how to by a bookworm/honors student/ballet dancer AND anti-conformist/sarcastic/child-of-hippies snot

@kj, the best part of the Bohemian Rhapsody performance: the solo part at "So you think you can stop me and spit in my eye" went to one of the most stuck-up jocks in the school. And he came in on WRONG NOTE AND SANG THE WHOLE STANZA THAT WAY. Hilarious.

OK, it's settled. Fashion consiglieri be damned--the wallet chain is comin' back for this guy. 

RE skateboarding when I was 14 - my brother, 3.5 years younger, started skating at te same time I did so by the time I was 16 and had been skating for 2 or 3 years, so had he. Only he was really good by this time, it was ridiculous. He still skates and is still really, really good.

@ Kirk - Too cruel! I was at a show once and there was a wooden kind of balcony thing and I was sitting on the floor and my chain got stuck between the boards. I tried to get up and got pulled back down on my ass by the chain.

at 14 i had given up my paper route and was stocking shelves and mopping floors at the corner store .. probably wearing tshirts and skinny jeans hmmmm.   on my cassette tapes, probably zz top, red rider, bryan adams, the police .. in addition to all of the stuff my FIVE older siblings had left behind in the rec room.

(I say this as a person who regularly trips, smacks herself on things, and falls on her ass incredibly frequently.)

@Zoot: a friend of mine posted that article on Facebook and it opened up a huge debate. Frankly, I think it's a little irresponsible of the teacher/adult supervisor to let that happen. It strikes me as setting dumb kids up for humiliation. While I don't think we should go as far as we sometimes do to make everything fluffy and safe, this seems to be a case where people need to be held accountable for something stupid. 

My little sister's first hubby played on a recreational hockey team with Larry Gowan. Dude is cool as hell apparently. Yep, say his name like 'Wedding Gowan".

it was a bit strange being 14 in the early 90s.  people didn't know what to do with their fashion because of the 80s, and grunge was just upon us.  Luckily my younger brother picked up on the grunge look, where I was lost cause.

Well, CBC Radio3 World, I've quickly finished two last minute projects, including a request letter from a California Assemblywoman.  I'm now waiting for Peggy to get down here to pick me up, take me off to Sacramento International Airport and then I'm off to Canada - again.  I have scooped all of my Canadian change out of my drawer ($7.37 in coins), and have picked up some folding cash at the bank.  Have tightly packed a carry on suitcase, and am bringing some California (edible) goodness for the friends up there.  I just hope I can take it on the plane!

I saw a show with her and Said the Whale at the Toothy Moose during HPX '09. She was chatting with me and my editor for a bit and there were maybe 60 people in the (horrid) venue at its peak. It was my first second small show (saw Dan Mangan on a whim the night before, even smaller crowd) and I fell in love with live music, having been rather blase beforehand (only having seen a few "big" shows, where I went more for the friendship and experience).

@ Carver-the area around Ryerson is quite centrally located and I walked around there A LOT when I was in Toronto using a hand-drawn map from my friend. Most streets run north-south (like jarvis, sherbourne, church) and east-west (like bloor, dundas, gerrard-near Ryerson, carlton/college). Also, the buses run up and down individual streets a lot in that area, which is helpful i.e there's a Jarvis bus.

@laurita I have a few good memories from Zaphods. I worked on the hill for two summers, good times. I've never seen Hey Ocean! live though I almost did recently... money & friends who love indie music are rarely available on the same days.

That's amazing. I thought Georges was off limits to the public? One time only thing I guess.

DID YOU KNOW? Supposedly there are tunnels that go under the harbour out to Geeorges Island. The tunnels reportedly start somewhere around the location of the old market (Keiths brewery on Water St.). When they built that hotel right near there, an archeological discovery suggested they were more than folklore but I think there was a cover up. My buddy and I spent months exploring and looking for these tunnels. There are tunnels under Citadel Hill too! Creepy!
