@Shonica - I went to physical therapy yesterday, and more importantly, got some anti inflammation meds and the difference is dramatic.  Back at work, and about 75% better than yesterday morning.  Arthritis?  Isn't that just for old people?  ;)

Regarding Disney - It has never had the sense of wonder to me as it did when I was at Disneyland in 1958, when Disneyland was only three years old.  My last visit there?  1965.  Did visit Disney World in Florida in 1982.  No particular desire to go again, and never took my kids there.

Lana, I know you're talking about finding some place to eat near the stations, but my gosh, anyone on the train will eat better on the train than they do in their normal life.  Just go to the website and look at the menus.  Trust me, no one traveling in the sleepers will go hungry on this train.

Re: Disney

I wanted to go when I was a kid, but that was really, really out of the question for my family.  Then when I "grew up" I became anti-Disney-princess-movie (can't stomach the portrayal of female characters).  I did not allow my daughter to watch any of them when she was small, and successfully dodged the Disney Princess bullet.  HOWEVER, despite my anti-Disney beliefs, my husband convinced me to take a family vacation to Disneyworld when our daughter was about 5 years old, and I have to admit, we all loved it.  We skipped the princess parts, and enjoyed the dinosaur area, and Lion King-related stuff.  We went back again when she was 10, and enjoyed it again in a different way.  Customer service is top-notch.

@Carlyg - Station stop in Melville shows the train leaving at 12:40pm, but could arrive an hour earlier.  (There is a huge amount of padding in the schedule!)

@smalliebigs i'm surprised you can participate on this blog. With all that garbage on your face getting in the way of your eyes i figured it would be quite difficult. But I will give DJ Lana props - she is mostly likely the cooler of the two Lana's here.  

@Carlyg - I'm looking at the VIA Rail timetable, and it shows the departure time for Melville at 12:40pm.  And if they expect to do anything on the platform, expect the train there for up to an hour earlier than that. 

Winnipeg is awesome! I lived there for about 5 months. We went to a different pub/restaurant every week (maybe twice a week) for nachos. It was our quest to find the best nachos in town!

@Carlyg - That's one of my self imposed responsibilities!  Correcting misconceptions about the train!  I'll readily admit, I was highly skeptical about how this trip, as envisioned, could even happen, but since then, I've come around to realize that VIA Rail know what they're getting into, and since they're giving "us" the use of one of the Skyline dome cars for a "music car", it should leave the Park car dome observation on the rear of the train as the sactuary for all of the "innocents" who happened to make reservations on this very different Canadian.  I suspect I'll act as a buffer between these "normal" passengers and the ToT folks!  I figured someone has to do it!  Besides, I just have to see how this comes off!

FlufferNutter! I've never heard of this before or even considered putting marshamllows in a sandwich. But I have a 12 year old who would think this is a dreamy idea. (in my house marshmallows only experience the glow of a bonfire or the bottom of a pot when becoming rice krispie squares)

Lana, 'The Forks' is an awesome spot where the Red and Assinibone? River meet in a 'fork'. Great spot to have a few drinks and watch live music.

I'm partial to Lanarama... Maybe for selfish reasons. To replace making real mix CDs/tapes (I miss making tapes!) I use a few websites like 8 Tracks, and Blip FM. Not really the same - but they're are also a great way to kill more time on the internet. And that's what we all need right? 

though while you're in Toronto, it should be Lanarama Almost Live.

Yes, that is the first and middle part of the film but Mulan's also the one who saves the day in the end. She hid the fact she was a woman because the culture she was living in prevented her from doing things, not because she was ashamed of it. She was also left behind because her male colleagues were engrained in that culture.

What I take out of it was that she didn't allow the fact that she was a woman or the fact that society didn't think she was capable because of her sex to stop her from achieving her goals.

The whole Iron Throne thing came about when I changed my profile pic to one of myself 'conquering the Iron Throne' at the TIFF Lightbox AGoT exhibit in Toronto. The comment "I have conquered the Iron Throne" happened to fall on #500 for that particular blog. Since then, we've taken to calling comment 500 'The Iron Throne'.

A few days later, somebody suggested that the blogger who lands the Throne should be rewarded. It was decided that they would get the opportunity to choose any song in the system and Grant would have to play it for them during his show.

@carrieg - Yes, I'm still here (until 11:30).  Like all schedules, the departure time is the critical time.  The Edmonton stop does show a 35 minute stop, but if the train is late, the stop will be shorter.  But odds are, we'll be much earlier, up to an hour early.  Edmonton is a restocking stop on the train, and backs down the old passenger lead to the old CN downtown depot.  Bring your walking shoes, as you'll have to walk alongside the train for about 15 cars to get to your sleeper!

@TheRadioHead - you did a better job in selling it than I did.  10 years ago you could buy a house downtown for $50k or less.  It's cheap to live here and our music scene is great, even though I don't know it that well.  We are a big city but not too big, still room for the little guy to make it!

Most of what I know is from visiting and talking to my brother, who lived there for something like 17 years. He really liked everything but the weather and the traffic

@carrieg - I've stayed at the Strathcona before. it's really close to Union & accessible to King, Queen, etc.  It's not fancy but it's clean & I actually got really decent room service food from the pub.It's not too far from where peeps stay at Ryerson.

yeah, I know. Much more so than here, though. And I spent quite a few years in Calgary as well, where there's really NO humidity. The first year moving back to AB after living in Mtl and TO, I never put shorts on the whole summer.

SK is somewhere in between. If winters were a little milder it'd be the perfect place

@carrie - just had a quick lookon airbnb & there's stuff as cheap as $50 a night for a room. most hosts don't care about what time you come & go & are really helpful for people who don't know a city. They probably won't want you bringing folk back tho, unless 2 of you book together.

@TRH - thanks - I am trying to contact one of the owners now. Are you at Ryerson? Being on my own I just don't want to be away from everyone else and having never been to the city and all.

@CarrieG  Many of us are staying at Ryerson!  It will be the party hotel! 

It is the cheapest we could find, and Loweeda and I liked it a lot last year. It's older ie-carpets and drapes.  But the beds and bathrooms were nice, and it came with a good breakfast included.
