Here's your disc of the week for Jan. 27, 2013. Each week CBC Radio 2's In Concert looks at new classical music releases and selects one recording that you'll want to know about.
Artists: Janina Fialkowska, piano, with the Chamber Players of Canada.
Repertoire: Mozart's Piano Concertos No. 13 and 14.
Label: ATMA Classique.
The prized Canadian pianist Janina Fialkowska is on something of a roll this year. After receiving the Governor General's Performing Arts Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement this past summer, the Montreal-born virtuoso spent the fall giving concerts on both sides of the Atlantic, was the cover girl of the January issue of Classical Music Magazine in the UK and her recent CD, Chopin Recital 2, has been nominated as the Best Instrumental CD of the Year by the BBC Music Magazine Awards.
Not bad for an artist who, 10 years ago, was facing the prospect of never playing the piano again after going through life-threatening surgery to deal with a cancerous tumour in her left arm.
But that's all behind her now, and Fialkowska is enjoying a vibrant career that's filled with concerts, recordings and rave reviews. Her brand new CD, just out this week on the ATMA Classique label, features two concertos by Mozart arranged by the composer for piano and strings.
On this recording, Fialkowska renews her collaboration with the splendid Ottawa-based ensemble, the Chamber Players of Canada, led by Toronto Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Jonathan Crow. Their two previous recordings featuring Chopin concertos and two earlier Mozart concertos proved irresistible and this latest release is a welcome addition to their growing catalogue. The delicate transparency of these stripped-down orchestrations, played with great style and assurance by the CPC, combined with Fialkowksa's always elegant and sensitive playing, make for a winning combination.
