CHART #297

listenCheck out this week's edition of the chart as a handy dandy playlist or podcast (stream with the play button, download from the right-hand column).

In addition to counting down this week's Top 30 songs, we answer the question: what would happen if you picked the long list for the Polaris Music Prize?

The long list announcement is mere days away, so I'm launching "Polaris Season" by playing songs from albums that you chose as long list shoe-ins!

POLARIS 2012 GUESSCheck out this playlist that counts them down in order of how you voted on The R3-30 FunClub!

Top 10 albums that you think must be on the Polaris long list:

  10. Sound Kapital by Handsome Furs
  9. Provincial by John K. Samson
  8. Scrappy Happiness by Joel Plaskett Emergency
  7. David Comes To Life by F*cked Up
  6. Visions by Grimes
  5. Voyageur by Kathleen Edwards
  4. We're All Dying To Live by Rich Aucoin
  3. Michigan Left by Arkells
  2. Little Mountain by Said The Whale
  1. Oh Fortune by Dan Mangan

I think that the best side-effect of the whole Polaris experience is the debate that follows the short and long list reveal. Who made it? Who didn't? Why? Why not? It will be interesting to see how many - if any - of the albums you picked actually make it on to the long list!

The R3-30 airs Fridays @ 9am ET and 9pm ET and Saturdays @ noon ET. The R3-30 Podcast drops on Saturdays!

It's Friday! I get to see Monster Truck tonight! I'm gonna wear the shirt!!

Polaris! I don't even know.... I don't really think most of those albums should make it to the short list but I think they'll be on the long. That being said, I haven't put much thought into it so I can't say too much.

In short: I love David Comes To Life and I hope it makes it to the short list. I'm not a huge fan of Grimes but I think because she's so out there Visions will make it to the short list.

BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG2

Born Gold - Bodysongs

Dog Day - Deformer

Elliott BROOD - Days Into Years

Fucked Up - David Comes To Life

Japandroids - Celebration Rock

Patrick Watson - Adventures In Your Own Backyard

PS I Love - You Death Dreams

Rich Aucoin - We're All Dying To Live

Trust - TRST

10. Summer of Lust - Library Voices

9. We're All Dying to Live - Rich Aucoin

8. Provincial - John K Samson

7. Days Into Years - Elliott Brood

6. Grand Prix - North Lakes

5. Little Mountain - Said the Whale

4. Voyageur - Kathleen Edwards

3. The End of That - Plants & Animals

2. Celebration Rock - Japandroids

1. Oh Fortune - Dan Mangan

Nobody voting wanted to look like a dick when Arcade Fire won either. The Polaris jury needs to be impartial, and last's year's voting had the weight of a Grammy winner to contend with. It skewed things a bit, esp. when you consider the raison d'etre of Polaris to impartially decide the most ming-blowing album. Sure Arcade Fire are among the most commercial and popular bands Canada has ever produced, that popularity shouldn't have virtually guaranteed a Polaris win (as it did in my opinion).

Great list. I'm not huge on a couple (Trust or PS I Love you) but I can understand their appeal and wouldn't be at all surprised to see them there.

If I got to pick the short list:

1 - Rich Aucoin - We're All Dying to Live (winner)

2 - Radio Radio - Havre de Grace

3 - Handsome Furs - Sound Kapital

4 - Eight and a Half - Eight and a Half

5 - Born Gold - Body Songs

6 - Bahamas - Barchords

7 - The Darcys - The Darcys

8 - Siskiyou - Keep Away the Dead

9 - Dan Mangan - Oh Fortune

10 - Some fairly obscure act that I haven't heard of yet but will love (like Colin Stetson last year...yes I actually liked Colin Stetson's album)

As others have mentioned before, the whole point of Polaris was to recognize good music in the hopes of increasing exposure. I think last year's result is just evidence that it's working.

@vraets [90] So many extraneous parameters and reasons have been imposed on Polaris. Many of them are not based in any fact or reality. Two, for instance:

It's not for exposure and it's not for indie/emerging bands.

Here's the mission statement: "A not-for-profit organization that honours, celebrates and rewards creativity and diversity in Canadian recorded music. Polaris recognizes and markets albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard to musical genre, professional affiliation, or sales history. it is adjudicated by selected music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers."

Now, debate can centre around whether or not we think that's what really happens...

@vraets - not many people could make an album as good as JP as fast as he did.  You either love Joel or hate him, that's ok with me.  Same with JKS, I don't mind him but I find people go a little too nutty over him.  Saw him at WFF a few years ago (workshop) and he sucked (solo).

I recently saw read an interview with Dan Mangan (I can't remember where, so no link) and he credited his manager at the Granville Island location of the Keg for helping him out big time - they preserved his job for 6 1/2 years while he toured. He'd come back and the job was waiting for him. Reading between the lines it sounds like he'd have given up long ago if he didn't have that option.

I'm all right with the fact that Plaskett did a triple album. Sure there is what some call "filler" but maybe he wasn't trying to write an album full of hits. Maybe he just had these songs, he had the resources to release them and so on, so, he did.

There are some really traditional sounding east coast tunes on there that are'nt the rockers we expect from him. Break out that tin whistle bud!

@marie_curious [152] RIP Bob Welch.

All due respect, I'm tired of artists from that era talking sh..crap about music being "disposable". Music is music. It's that simple. It's never been better or worse.

Some people don't like classical. Some don't like skiffle. Some don't like c&w. Some don't like prog rock.

Pick a genre/era and there is good and bad stuff in all of it.

So anybody want to predict the winner?

I'm going (as I mentioned before) with Rich Aucoin

 - every track has been well received

 - it's very complex and well layered without being overwelming

 - it has a wide appeal without being simle

 - the album features contributions from approximately 500 different artists

 - the album is almost like a classical symphany: the whole show is previewed within the first track. Every piece has movements and there's a flow of new ideas through the album and each song. It evolves and chances instead of falling back to the same hooks over and over again.

Aucoin has done something with this album that's rare in music made after 1900. It really is impressive.

But these artists obviously seem to forget when they were young and the reaction to what they were doing by those who came before them.

Beethoven, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles...all had their share of vitriol lodged at them by their predecessors.

Predecessors should listen closer and not fear what they don't understand.

@zoot the list is limited to albums released by Canadian artists from June 1, 2011 to May 31, 2012. In other words, that's a huge list, and many indie albums probably don't circulate more than 100km from home. So it's doubtful that a "master" list could be produced, at least, for a reasonable sum of money.

@craig [209] I'm not sure you understand my billing rate. I'm an engineer*, not a high school student.

*technically I can't say that... I'm an EIT.

@bengineer - do you go to daltech? my buddy went there. I would join him at the T Room now and then for 5 jugs of hard liquor and trivia. Engineering types are ridiculous. At least my buddy is, he's very ocd with symmetry.

@flannel & bengineer

I have a few 'memories' of the T room as well, from a workterm I did in Halifax.  Never did the hard liquor jugs (they might have been discontinued at that point), but I'd always order two jugs of draft to start the night "no glasses please".

I go to "Sexton Campus" - they dropped the DalTech moniker a few years back, for some reason. Most people call it TUNS.

I've paid attention to the Polaris for the last 3 years at least and will probably do so again this year but truth is, it's either frustrating or annoying every year and really makes no sense to me. Whatever though, I know what I like and it's pretty much gauranteed to never win the Polaris (although Fucked Up did win and honestly, that's where I heard them firstly and foremostly).
