Well, your good friend Craig Norris is down in Austin, hosting Radio 3's SXSW festivities. This week, the R3-30 hosting duties fall to his plucky understudy, Dave Shumka.

This week on the show, we're celebrating St. Patrick's Day by counting down the top Canadian indie songs that make you feel Irish. I'm not sure you can pinpoint why you would feel Irish, but it probably has something to do with magical deliciousness.

And of course we'll be counting down the top 30 Canadian indie songs of the week. On the Irish tip, Tyler from Said The Whale describes his favourite green garment and Paul from PS I Love You tells us how St. Patrick's Day is like a zombie apocalypse.

I miss excuses to drink at any hour. When I lived in Residence at university we had an event every year in March called Raise a little hell and we would drink from 6am until 6am.

@marie: yes, but with many hidden costs. (social, and economic).

The issue here is that they want to put one in toronto, which will compete with the 2 in niagara and 1 in windsor. Ultimatley, the other 3 (or some of them) will fail (why would a torontoite go to the others if there is a local one?).  They were originally funded by the taxpayers, and if they fail, the taxpayers will pay the costs.  The operators dont own the properties.  What will these cities do with a empty hulk of a casino?  Plus, all the loss of jobs and property taxes to these cities that desperatley needs them.

Its really a desperate power grab.  Steal from these other places to benefit Toronto. (which, in my oppinion, it wont actually benefit toronto).

I haven't played it yet, though. It contains Big Blue Wave and Make a New Dance Up.

Chopz, more helpfully, I think you would find that, depending on the station, it's a lot of hits from the two thousands, the nineties, eighties and, yea, seventies, but that the selection would be different; it would include American hits, but also a bunch of Canadian tunes less often heard in the States.

I don't think you'd hear a lot of hip hop or heavy metal, although... (I don't know Toronto radio -- or really any other region's, so...)

Eric's 247 shows Toronto young (I mean young) "hip" "cool" kids' tastes, IMO. Fair enough.

That said, there's a barrowfull of golden oldie horse patooties being played on multiple stations.

What the heck do you think spawned Nickelback?

Also, there are starting to be some halfway actually cool stations like LIVE FM -- it owns a venue, and is the one that runs the Big Money Shot -- some of you may remember Hollerado winning 25 grand a couple of years back.

Benoit from Ottawa

My problem with repetitions on R3 occurs when they become so cumulatively numerous that it makes me get annoyed at a song I really like or, more likely, just blunts its enjoyability. For instance, I really like Master's Thesis by John K., but do I want to hear it 28 times? (I own the cd, but I'd heard the song 20 times before I bought it.)

Then there's the case of a song I don't like, that I've gotten tired of, or that simply grates after a while, I won't mention Lone Runner. Around the thirty-fifth time,...

I understand the, in the end, canuck-positive commercial aims* of R3, but my point here is that R3 should avoid that most common of pitfalls of ordinary on-air radio stations: picking from a limited rotation of tunes.

Finally, I find it quite refreshing to hear one of Grant's shows that are more varied (Craig's too, listener picks & listener co-host shows), and I especially like it when Grant gets all requesty.

*Helping bands make it.
