At 10:40 p.m. ET on June 6 at La Maison symphonique in Montreal, André Bourbeau, president of the jury of the Montreal International Musical Competition, announced the top three prize winners of its 2012 edition. Following two evenings of performances by eight finalists, accompanied by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, the jury deliberated briefly and arrived at its decision:

First prize:
$30,000 plus a career development program valued at $20,000
Philippe Sly, bass baritone, Canada, age 23

Second prize:
$15,000
Olga Kindler, soprano, Switzerland, age 31

Third prize:
$10,000
John Brancy, baritone, United States, age 23

MIMC grant for the five unranked finalists:
$2,000
Emily Duncan-Brown, soprano, Canada, age 26

Sidney Outlaw, baritone, United States, age 30

Yuri Gorodetski, tenor, Belarus, age 29

Andréanne, Paquin, soprano, Canada, age 29

Won Whi Choi, tenor, South Korea, age 31

The following special prizes will be awarded on Friday evening at La Maison symphonique at a gala concert featuring performances by the laureates:

Jean A. Chalmers Award for the best Canadian artist:
$10,000

Joseph Rouleau Award for the best artist from Quebec:
$5,000

Award for the best performance of the imposed Canadian work:
$5,000

Radio-Canada People’s Choice Award:
$5,000
