I suppose it happens to every generation, but the evolution of listening to music makes me feel old. I especially feel old when I stare at that box of mixtapes (mixed tapes?) in my closet that I just can’t part with. They are the reason why I haven’t upgraded my stereo since 2003 – I still have a cassette deck. I’m willing to mess with a crummy auxiliary cable to use my iPod all because of a box of memories that I rarely listen to.
So I listened to them. I noticed a trend: making out.
No matter how many tapes I made per year, at least one of them had songs for smooching. Even before my first kiss, I had it planned. It was all going to go down to either the Smashing Pumpkins’ "Disarm" or the Smiths’ “Asleep” (depending on which side of the tape, and if we started kissing at track two).
Maybe kids these days just create make-out playlists? Surely adults do too, and if you don’t it’s probably time you start.
Let’s go down memory lane, shall we? Do you remember what was on your high school make-out mix? What about now? Do share. And if you have Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” on one of them, high fives from me!
I’ll be talking about this post (and your song picks, I hope you don’t mind) on The Strombo Show on Radio 2. Tune in Sunday night between 8pm - 11pm and get ready to slow dance in your livingroom!
