They’ve been called our generation’s answer to U2. They surprised everyone — including themselves — by capturing an album of the year Grammy in 2011. They count pop legends David Byrne and David Bowie among their most passionate fans. And in less than a decade, they leapt from playing Montreal’s tiniest clubs to headlining the biggest arenas of North America.

Arcade Fire have blown past every bar they’ve set, year after year, album after album, and with four spectacular LPs now to their name, it’s as good a time as any to take a look back — a listen back — at the highlights of their incredible discography.

CBC Radio 3 staff have poured over the Montreal collective’s four full-length studio releases to pick out the critical darlings, the singles, the standout tracks that gripped our attention as soon as we first heard them. We present to you our list of the 15 best Arcade Fire songs — thus far.

@Nana - Its my absolute favourite time of year. If I could live in Autumn all year long, I would. When I was a kid, my parents had rules that I couldn't bring up anything to do with Fall, or my Halloween Costume, until halfway through August. Otherwise, beginning of summer vacation, I'd just start talking about and planning for fall! I'm a hopeless case. Hi-five your hubby for his Fall-love from me!@NVP - Yeah, it's definitely refreshing, in a sense - it feels like everything should start again. I've always felt renewed in Autumn.

I'm trying to think of what I'm most looking forward to, and I think its rambles in the big park outside my house in the chilly air, looking at the colors change and drinking pumpkin spice lattes. And also carving ALL the Pumpkins, and decorating my house for halloween, because I've got sort of a yard/outdoor area now, and there are tons of kids in the neighbourhood! I have all the plans. I may dress up like a scare-crow and sit on the bench outside and scare kids. That would be awesome. And also mean. But mostly awesome...

I have had an up & down relationship with Arcade Fire. On paper, I should like them, but...

When Funeral came out, there was so much hype around it, "best album ever" sort of stuff. So when I finally listened to it, I remember thinking, "Really? This? Best ever?".

I didn't hate it or anything, but I definitely suffered from hype backlash. (I've since warmed up on it a little)

So when Neon Bible came out, and I wasn't expecting much... and ended up really liking the album.

Then The Suburbs happened, and I had very much the same reaction as Funeral. It was a strong album, but again, I didn't think it was the BEST EVAR!!! And then the more it took over the world, the more I... resented it (for lack of a better term).

Which isn't to say "I hate it because it's popular!", more to say I got really tired, really quick.

And that brings us to Reflektor, and I don't think any song I've heard from it have made me want to listen to a double album. I probably should sit down and listen to the whole thing. Maybe it'll change my mind, but I doubt it.

Arcade Fire played at a huge venue in Edmonton and I was not excited for it at first. I really wanted it to be more intimate...

Anyway, the concert couldn't have been more perfect. It sounded GREAT, which surprised me... probably the best sound I've heard in my lifetime, and they just did an all around great job not going overboard on weird props. They had really simple things that made the show so lively. It was really the best time I have had. The audience was really respectful and happy, too. I wish I was closer, though. With the large venues, it seems like you can never get a GREAT seat.

I do like Arcade Fire, a lot, but have never bought one of their albums or tried to see them live. Of course, I didn't know them when they were new, and I haven't been to an arena show for anyone, now that they're huge. I do like their lyrics a lot, and the songs were used to great effect as part of the soundtrack in the superb feature film, Boyhood, which is set in and around Austin, TX, not far from Houston, hometown of Win Butler of AF, which also deals in many of the same themes as AF's songs. Boyhood, in US theaters now, was filmed over a 12-year period, as the boy actor grew from 6 years of age to 18.

mornin'

Who called them our generation’s answer to U2?

I have seen Arcade Fire twice, the second time was just a couple weeks ago, the first was on the tour for The Suburbs. I really like their live show, they were even better this time around. I really like all their albums. In fact, Reflektor is the only album of theirs I don't own, the only reason I don't own it is because I haven't bought any music in a long time. The rest of thir albums, I have bought and played the shit out of them. I'm not one to yell at the world saying THIS IS THE BEST BAND EVER, but the Arcade Fire strike a chord with me and I really like them. There are only about 5 bands I feel that way about and Arcade Fire are one of them. I don't care if people don't like them, I'm not going to try and convert them. I don't care if they have become uber popular and I'm not going to say "well, I listened to them when..." because i don't really care.

I don't generally make lists ranking my favourite songs by an artist. My favourite Arcade Fire song might be No Cars Go, or it might be Ready To Start. It could also be Joan of Arc. I don't know, I like a bunch of their songs.

Side note: I woke up today with Tall Trees by Matt Mays stuck in my head.

While I like revisiting Funeral and Neon Bible, Arcade Fire lost me with Suburbs. They've become inauthentic seekers of commercial success instead of the innovators they once were. They'd redeem themselves with me if they declined their Polaris nom and give fledgling bands a chance. I hope this jury sees this and does not give AF another win.

@Reggie - Ha! Thanks! I think they definitely got a lot of new 'bandwagon' style fans recently, but I do think a lot people genuinely like them (a lot like Margaret Atwood!) - I just like something with a bit more energy, or more feeling, or something. I dunno, I'd take something like Japandroids, the Arkells, Jenn Grant, or Ivy Mairi - even (and yes, I know the hate they get for their latest album) Tegan and Sarah!

I feel like Arcade Fire (what I've heard of them anyways) just sort of exists in this middle-ground, where they're never too loud, too hook-y, too synth, too-sad, too-mad, too-happy - Just this mildly depressive, beigey middle-ground, like background music. They never go truly over the top or delve quite deep enough into real feeling for me - but then I'm a person who likes that sort of 'more is more' kind of thing, which probably does not put me in their demographic. They're really technically proficient, and while I appreciate the skill they have, I really gravitate to the depth of feeling portrayed in the music I listen to.

Again, this is just my opinion.

I think the Suburbs was an brilliant record that captured a prevalent feel and atmosphere that resonated with a lot of people.  Not just an indie crowd.  I think it deserved the Polaris it won.

I don't feel the same about Reflektor, its just a decent album with some good songs on it.

i think if you could refuse a Polaris nom, then Godspeed ..   would have.

if it's about artistic merit (they're saying integrity now too .. ?)  then i dunno, you can't really exclude an album because the band has won before.   on the other hand, there's a lot of artistic merit out there ..

Not always but y'know, on occasion. And Arcade Fire have that (especially live). Ronnie Spectre invented it, The Grateful Dead took it on the road and Arcade Fire are doing it 2014 style.

They had like, 5 percussion instruments up there, how can you not boogie?

Canada was an early adopter on a few things. A ton of punk bands in the 70s, just none that made it big. And the synth pop in the 80s...Canada was there with bells on in the very early 80s (MWH formed in the late 70s, first EP in 1980)

Not here in Ontario, a very poor year for tomatoes. Not really tons of heat and sun, lots of rain, and anyway, I'm just repeating what I heard.

Green leafy veggies, yes, they're big. Grapes too, a bumper crop. Tomatoes? Pffft.

Oh my goodness, Capaldi is going to be an awesome Doctor!!

He can play "serious resting face" better than anyone.

I'll never forget him as Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It/In the Loop. So many hilarious lines. I saw Malcolm Tucker in one of his rants as the new Doctor.

That so great to hear about Josh. We see the same in my grandson, dancing when ever he hears music no matter where he is. At months old he was keeping time. While the other side of the family is hoping he'll be an athlete because he is big, music is what is being encouraged. He got his first instrument yesterday, a harmonica in the key of C.

The one thing that bothered me most was how much they bashed people over the head with the whole "It's a new Doctor, deal with it" thing, especially at the end.

I know it's the first regeneration since it got popular over here (I think it's the first one I've done "live" as I only started watching after Smith started)but it felt like it was written specifically for the vocal minority of people freaking out; the people that were more fans of Matt Smith than The Doctor
