Jennifer Castle's new record is the heart of a hummingbird: small, quiet, compact and so very strong. You can listen to Pink City in the player above one week before its release, and pre-order the album, too, because it's just that great.
There's no bombast to be found on the record's 10 tracks. Pink City is unassuming and confident, content to let Castle's lyrics float above piano or flute or delicately deliberate strings (thanks to Owen Pallett).
Among the early standouts from a pretty perfect collection: "How or Why" depicts happiness with a hint of melancholy; "Sailing Away" recalls Joni Mitchell at her most pitch-perfect and insightful; "Nature"'s wry observations ("And underneath a rolling dime/ I lift my skirt for the economy"); and the title track, which flirts with some torch song sax flourishes.
