Listen to songs from CBC Music's epic list: 100 best Canadian songs ever

We thought narrowing down last July's list of the 100 greatest Canadian albums was difficult, but just try deciding on the best Canadian songs with a staff of music lovers of all ages sprawled coast to coast. Apparently we love a challenge (and a great fight), but the dust has settled and we're pleased to present CBC Music's 100 best Canadian songs ever.

It's easy to forget just how much talent has emerged from this country, and to further distill what it means to be a Canadian musician is almost impossible. As with last summer's 100 greatest albums, the talent in this country is unparalleled, the scope of our music as vast and diverse as the landscape. A strong foundation of musicians and bands have worked hard and continue to work hard; they are known and proven quantities who hold their own on an international scale, making Canada one of the biggest and most exciting music hotspots in the world.

To help us celebrate these 100 songs, we’ve invited an incredible array of musicians, writers, actors and artists to act as unofficial cheerleaders and endorse each selection. Among the wonderful people who were eager to discuss their favourite Canadian songs are Dolly Parton, Spoon, Sarah McLachlan, the Tenors, the Kaiser Chiefs, Jenny Lewis, Tegan and Sara, Bob Saget and more.

Songs 25-1 are in the gallery above, and you can check out songs 100-26 right here. Press play on the stream at the top of this post to listen to all the available songs from the artists' CBC Music pages, or click on the YouTube playlist farther down to watch all the videos back-to-back. You can also listen to Sonica, which will be counting down the songs every week as well. And you can check out our infographic below for a better breakdown of the stats and figures from our 100 best Canadian songs ever project.

I only skimmed the lists as they were put out, but was there no Matthew Good (Band) anywhere in the top 100?

Are there really 100 better songs than Apparitions? Or Hello, Time Bomb? Or even Weapon?

That's an omission that makes me sad.

In my best Comic Book Guy voice…..Worst list ever. Can I go Nowhere with You? No you may not.

Seriously though, these lists are for sheep less than avid music fans. No real Band fan would choose the Weight as their best song…most known, sure, but not their best

If nothing else, the list serves as a short history lesson for the younger generations that may not have ever been exposed to some of the older songs on the list.

Stevie, I dunno...

I would never call Hello Time Bomb or Apparitions Matt Good's "best" song, but the point of these lists (not just this particular one, but any "best list ever") is usually the best single, isn't it? A cross of best and most well known.

A real Worst. List. Ever. would be nothing but deep album cuts that only hardcore fans know...

Lists are for arguing about.

That said, I had much joy spring up in my heart when I saw #3 was Wheat Kings by The Tragically Hip.  I love that song so much. Is it Canada's 3rd best song?  I dunno, but it made me happy to see it.

Young Galaxy, hands down. Catherine McCandless is such a badass frontman woman person

Mind you, I was also pretty underwhelmed the one time I saw Pup, and don't get the "best live band" hype, so I am biased.

A) Who came from the farthest?

@LauraBeth - another factor to add to Kirk's already excellent, but somewhat confusingly enumerated list:

4) What mood am I in?

Pup and Young Galaxy are pretty different so consider your energy level and mood at the time.  This can be affected by whatever band you're seeing previously.

This does not sound like a good idea to me...

"Toyota wants to help you scream at your unruly kids.

The latest version of the company's Sienna minivan has a feature called "Driver Easy Speak." It uses a built-in microphone to amplify a parent's voice through speakers in the back seats.

Toyota says it added Easy Speak "so parents don't have to shout to passengers in the back." But chances are many parents will yell into the microphone anyway.

And the feature only works one way, so the kids can't talk back. At least not with amplified voices."

I have been thinking of getting a dash cam. The other day I saw two jackasses on the TCH basically racing each other. One passed the other then they both got caught behind a slow car. The one that got passed was tailgating the passer. Then when the passer got to a passing lane he pulled up beside the slow car thinking that he could loose the guy behind him by staying beside the slow car until the passing lane ended. The guy behind went into the oncoming lane (up a blind hill and corner) and eventually passed the car (of course the car sped up and tried to prevent getting passed). I would have loved to get them on camera.

The only acceptable way to have a synth driven song is it's like this  (I went looking for a picture like this, but c'mon, how can you NOT link that majesty??!?!)

Note - I'm not against keyboard in a band, but I feel like it should exist much like the bass - to bring out the drums and the guitar, not be the centrepiece.

Ya, thanks Benoit.  Over and over and over.  Here, and on Twitter on the days it happens...because I can't post here...

Even though a complaint fixed it on one occasion it's never been fixed again.  Michael says he can't reproduce it, so can't see what the problem is.

I'm not ready to buy an iPhone 5 yet, that's for sure.

TRH, yeah, things are complex now. What with needing an app for iOS, another for Android, etc. etc., there's enormous room for complexity and, hence, invisible, intractable gremlins.

Ya, that's what my kid says and this is his line of work.  If they could reproduce it they could more likely fix it, but he also doubts many people have an iPhone 4 any more even though mine is 3 years old and still feels like brand new to me.

Electronic years are even faster than dog years.

Error at #8?

This testimony for "Suzanne" by Leonard Cohen:

"Everyone remembers their first summer love, backyard party, first dance, first kiss ... 'shy and nervous.' A great song puts you in a place and time, and these lyrics paint a picture of innocence, as fresh today as they were the day they were written."

Surely, Royal Wood must be talking about "Patio Lanterns" here, which would make sense since it would place Kim Mitchell at his rightful place on the list.

I looked through the whole 100 list and its terrible ... not the best songs from anyone I recognize and lots of just "lets put something in there for everyone" STUFF.   All in all ... the worst "best of" list I've ever seen.   And if they are in order .... well ... its even worse .

Were the selectors thinking "break out songs", "hit songs" , Mature intelligent or Naïve angst?  The list blows ... Matt Mays - Cocaine Cowgirl or Shine by Tom Wilson ... lots of obscure great stuff like Niagara with J'ai Vu and Alternate Neil Young like 6 or more to choose from I'd vote Thrashers or Powderfinger or Don't Let it Bring You Down and wat about " Doug and the Slugs"  , Downcild & David Wilcox etc. Lightouse and Edward Bear.   What's the criteria?  I sure don't see.

How could anyone pick Susanne over The Future by Cohen? for his best song [Some nostalgic malaise me thinks]  Do we pick best Artists ... then 1 song of theirs?  That's kind of the feel of the list outside of way much politics in the genres.  Oh, and so many genres ... but in some way ... tha's CBC

No Canadian Railroad Trilogy, no Northwest Passage?  Although I did appreciate the inclusion of Hot Child in the City, one of my favorite radio songs when I was 5? 6?  something like that.
