Listen to songs from CBC Music's epic list: 100 best Canadian songs ever

We've updated the gallery above with songs 25-1! Click here to check out just the top 25.

We thought narrowing down last July's list of the 100 greatest Canadian albums was difficult, but just try deciding on the best Canadian songs with a staff of music lovers of all ages sprawled coast to coast. Apparently we love a challenge (and a great fight), but the dust has settled and we're pleased to present CBC Music's 100 best Canadian songs ever.

It's easy to forget just how much talent has emerged from this country, and to further distill what it means to be a Canadian musician is almost impossible. As with last summer's 100 greatest albums, the talent in this country is unparalleled, the scope of our music as vast and diverse as the landscape. A strong foundation of musicians and bands have worked hard and continue to work hard; they are known and proven quantities who hold their own on an international scale, making Canada one of the biggest and most exciting music hotspots in the world.

To help us celebrate these 100 songs, we’ve invited an incredible array of musicians, writers, actors and artists to act as unofficial cheerleaders and endorse each selection. Among the wonderful people who were eager to discuss their favourite Canadian songs are Dolly Parton, Spoon, Sarah McLachlan, the Tenors, the Kaiser Chiefs, Jenny Lewis, Tegan and Sara, Bob Saget and more.

Songs 100-26 are in the gallery above, and every Tuesday in July we'll reveal the next set of 25 songs. Press play on the stream at the top of this post to listen to all the available songs from the artists' CBC Music pages, or click on the YouTube playlist below to watch all the videos back-to-back. You can also listen to Sonica, which will be counting down the songs every week as well. And you can check out our infographic below for a better breakdown of the stats and figures from our 100 best Canadian songs ever project.

I better see the following somewhere near the top:

Have Not Been the Same - Slow

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gord

My Only Aim - Hardship Post

Elevator Love Song - Stars

and please, do not forget Change of Heart this time.  You're always forgetting Change of Heart.

Pleased to see Kathleen Edwards' Change the Sheets make the list.  Disappointed at Nova Heart & I'm an Adult Now being so low.

In your gallery you have the "Bad Time to be Poor" video in the Glass Tiger slot.

Also you have, "Bad Time to be Poor" instead of  . . . well all of Martin Tielli's songs, unless those are coming up as 4 of the top 5.

Since you are supposedly counting down the 100 greatest songs and not the 100 greatest recordings, I certainly hope to see most or all of the following among the remaining 75:

Un Canadien errant; à la claire fontaine; The Canadian Boat Song; Farewell to Nova Scotia; Les Raftsmen; Reel de Montréal; The Huron Carol; M'en revenant de la Jolie Rochelle; and, perhaps most importantly, at least one of Mi'kmaq sakmow Henri Membertou's songs, the earliest recorded Canadian compositions. Even Alouette and I'se the B'y probably deserve some love.

OK, so maybe none of the above will be in your top 10, but if this is an attempt to compile a definitive list of Canada's greatest songs, please do it right. And as for that top 10, I trust it will include The Log Driver's Waltz as well as Slow's Have Not Been the Same. Oh, and likely something from La Bolduc, eh?

I haven't seen most of the list (why isn't it all there?), but I'm not loving what I have seen.  So here's what less-obvious bands/artists better be on:  New Pornographers, The Watchmen, Brasstronaut, Owen Pallett, Elliott Brood, Hawksley Workman, Black Mountain, Neko Case, Sam Roberts, The Tea Party, and definitely something from Sarah Harmer's original band Weeping Tile.

Why not just publish the list with links and let listeners choose whatever they want to play back?  Why the funnel approach?  I suspect that you are limiting listenership, by trying to drive all listeners through the same path.  Are you counting total plays or focusing on plays of this particular playlist....?

On the other subject, The Drunken Scoundrel plays a very eclectic mix. I like.

(Unfortunately, even with weekly added songs, R3 continues to use its shallow pool of songs.)

(But let me not go on about the subject. Our government has beggared the CBC.)

I have loved doing these news synopses, breaking down how a particular story was covered by different news sources. It has provided me interesting insight into the industry.

Hasn't changed my opinion of the National Post, however. Their articles are never the best on the subjects at which I am looking.

While I agree to just compare one artist to another is lazy journalism, doing so and then expanding upon the comparison - contextualizing it - is crucial to good opinion writing.

Such comparisons provide the reader with a basis from which they can understand the opinions you are presenting. They cannot, however, be given alone. You have to give the reader more. Although just making comparisons would make for pretty short reviews.

I can't even comment until I see the whole thing, but there is no way I could pick a best of all time list. I am terrible at doing lists to begin with, but something as insane as this?

I'm not gonna get bent out of shape about who is/isn't on the list and where they place, but I do hope there is/are a/some Matt Good songs up in there.

I'm hoping to be proven wrong, but I am not getting my hopes up. (I want to be pleasantly surprised, not expectedly let down.)

also, YAM I AM is my favourite album acronym.

@Krib - I'm not defending the issues with the rodeo at all, but because it's such a major event, they really push to create a spectacle, and those poor animals take the brunt of it, even with the animal welfare improvements made, I'd love to see them drop the calf-roping and chuckwagon races. I remember our old local rodeo was filled with the occasional bored steer just being like, "Hey dude, so we just want to walk around, right? I'm kinda bored and tired, so how about I don't buck, and say I did anyways, if anyone asks?"

It wasn't exactly exhilarating, but it was worth a few laughs and both the bull/horse and rider came off better for it.

My feeling of the Polaris Prize goes back to the statement, if I'm remembering correctly.

"Albums are judged by artistic merit without regard to genre or record sales"

If your disqualifying albums for being popular, then you are disqualifying them for record sales. Also just because an album is popular doesn't mean that it is without artistic merit.

Whether they deserve to be high up on the list of top 100 Canadian songs is another story. I couldn't name you 1 Nickleback song, but a lot of Rush songs. Lana,

I read that Song of the Summer blog and there's something about it that bugs me. Something that just doesn't sit right. I think it's the whole "enjoy things the way I enjoy them" mentality that it seems to have.

I'm not saying it's intentional, but what does he care that people want to have a song of the summer? No one is forcing anyone to have a "song of the summer", so why force people not to have one?

I know that was completely not the intent of the article, and I am not going to go to Chris' blog post and argue it or put up a stink, but... I dunno. I just kinda don't like when people try to tell others how to enjoy things.

Making a list of the top 100 Canadian songs of all time is a zany idea to begin with, of course. Then again, why not? I know better than to nitpick it, because it's all for shits and giggles anyway. Emily Haines is right that a real list like this would mostly be Neil Young songs, so you have to spread it around a bit and just have fun with it, right?

However, there were bound to be two outrageous injustices to this exercise and they have now both happened:

1. The general public likes (and knows) the wrong Rheostatics songs ("Claire" and "Bad Time to Be Poor,") for which the band will be forever remembered. This is kind of like the world deciding that the most notable Beatles song of all time is "Eight Days a Week." For people that listen to other songs, other albums, it's just an eternal mystery.

2. "Nautical Disaster" is the best Canadian song ever written, maybe the best song ever written period, and that's just a scientific fact. I didn't really expect this list to place it at the top (reserved for "Hallelujah" of fucking course), but seeing it rated below Mitsou or pop . . . whatever? Well, I would actually rather someone just punched me in the nuts.

Serves me right for reading this damn thing.
