thar b some good records coming out this month - most looking forward to hearing/checking out for myself is the FUCKED UP, CORB LUND, WHITE LUNG, SWOLLEN MEMBERS, LIBRARY VOICES.

Have already listened to Fucked UP's Glass Boys and declared it an insta classic. I Heard the lead single for the Swollen Members new album and I like it, it's sort of "commercial" sounding, in that, maybe, just maybe, it will see airplay on R3. I am a big fan of Corb's country stylings so I look forward to hearing that, he's a good lyricist. And White Lung screams nice.

In other news, I quit my job on Friday.

@wapuche - that's fair. I really like Spinnakers - first brewpub in western canada and they do a lot of local ingredients, so upscale pub food, $20+ entrees. For fast, tasty BBQ and cheaper, there's Pig (pulled pork poutine, it's a very good thing). For the real Victoria tourist experience, fish & chips at Barb's Fish & Chips at Fisherman's Wharf - look for the local sponging seal (there's a harbour seal that lurks for handouts around there).

Murchie's does a great afternoon tea that doesn't cost nearly as much as The Empress (which is the most famous). The Empress has The Bengal Lounge where they do a $35 curry buffet - I've yet to actually eat there but I've been for a ridiculously expensive cocktail (it was a tasty cocktail but still).

If she's downtown Spinnakers is a bit of a hike.

there's also Swan's and Canoe for brew pubs. But Victoria is such a fantastic city for beer that you don't have to go to a brew pub.

Bard and Banker downtown is nice. Decent food any time I've eaten there, and good beer menu

@krib - Spinnaker's isn't too bad maybe a km - you can walk along the inner harbour/songhees walk way which is great on a sunny day. Canoe is pretty good too. Swan's & the Bard & Banker don't do a lot for me personally. I'd rather go to The Garrick's Head - good pub food, lots of taps, sadly not quite as old, dingy and dodgy looking as it used to be. I just find the Bard & Banker & the Irish Times rather overpriced.

krib

what's the cocktail place down on Douglas - Veneto?

fictionjunkie
#73 posted by
fictionjunkie
on Jun 02, 2014

@wapuche - the University is about a 15 minute bus ride downtown via a couple different routes (it's probably a $20 cab ride though since those things are a rip off). Barb's is probably easier to get to via car but again if you bus downtown and then walk it's probably about a kilometer or so. There's another bus that can take you past Spinnakers without too much trouble.

krib
#74 posted by
krib
on Jun 02, 2014

for some reason, I've never made it into the Garrick's Head. Maybe it's the company I was keeping

I like the Bard and Banker, though. Irish Times isn't any big deal.

It's only 1 km to Spinnaker's from downtown? seems farther than that

'puche, Chinatown is pretty decent for finding good cheap food. It's in the general downtown area, too

Tagish used to live up that way. He probably knows what's up that way. I think he's still up north, though.

Victoria has great bus service; way beyond what you'd expect for a city that size. And it runs with a decent frequency until 1 AM

fictionjunkie
#78 posted by

@kirb & wapuche - ok according to Google I've lied - from Douglas & Fort ("downtown" drop off point on the bus at the Bay Centre, Google says 1.8km, 22 min on foot.

Chinatown is pretty cool and if she's into tea at all there is a great tea shop right there called Silk Road.

Wapuche
