According to Wikipedia (as of April 3, 2014), 574 bands formed in 1994. That seems like a metric ton of musical groups, but it’s about average for that decade.

But 1994 was an interesting time to start a band. People were coming off of grunge’s peak, riot grrrls’ roar, hair metal’s dissolution into nu and alternative, the burgeoning indie scene, jam bands and fusion acts finding common ground, trip-hop was in the air, and pop, R&B, dance and electronic were a tangle of intentions, influences and overlapping beats.

It wasn’t a very good year, but it was a pretty decent one. Sigur Ros, Garbage and Deerhoof came into the world. But so did Creed and Placebo. In the gallery above, we’ve picked 15 bands that provide a snapshot of what 1994 offered the world of music, including the Delgados, Spice Girls, Super Friendz, Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Cibo Matto.

Good flashback. I also thought Big Wreck were Canadian. Seemed like back in the 90s they played every small-town Canadian music festival and backwater bar. #BandNamesPredictYourFuture
