But Father Ray Kelly at Oldcastle church in Meath, Ireland, decided to surprise Chris and Leah O'Kane with a jaw-dropping, custom-made cover of Leonard Cohen's classic "Hallelujah" — and the video of his performance has quickly gone viral.
Kelly told BBC Radio that the couple didn't expect the song, and that they had only chosen that church because the reception was being held nearby.
"We had the rehearsal on Thursday evening and at the end I said, 'Sure, maybe I'll sing a song for you myself,'" he recounted. "Leah grinned and said, 'OK, sure,' but I don't think she was taking it too seriously."
But it turns out the priest's heavenly singing isn't entirely divinely inspired: Father Kelly says he is a trained singer who is working on his third album.
"I enjoy singing, but I wouldn't want to do it full time — I love what I'm doing as a priest," he said. "The way I look at it is, it's a gift one has, and if you have a gift you use it."
