LISTEN

Listen to all of Grant Lawrence's Searchlight Standout Artists so far!

This week, we officially announced the semi-finalists in all 24 regions across Canada for the 2014 edition of Searchlight: the hunt for Canada's best new artist. This voting period will last one week and next Monday we announce the finalists in each region!

During the initial entry phase and early voting of Searchlight, I chose dozens of early standouts, including Crissi Cochranethe Almighty Rhombus and Dennis Ellsworththe Magician, the Dead SouthScary Bear SoundtrackZerbinRed Arms, and Northern Haze. I'm happy to see many of those artists in the regional semi-finals.

This week, I've picked standouts from all 24 participating regions in Canada, and there are some great songs and stories within our gallery above.

Almost 4,500 artists from across the country entered an original song in Searchlight 2014 and now we're down to about 500 artists. You can vote for up to 10 artists a day, which we hope will encourage you to discover someone new.

The winning artist will receive $20,000 in new music equipment, a recording session here at CBC, plenty of airplay and a coveted slot at the CBC Music Festival in Vancouver.

And just to prove this isn't a here today/gone tomorrow contest, one year later, our 2013 winner, Sherman Downey and the Ambiguous Case, have just entered their 12th straight week on CBC Radio 2's Top 20.

Click through the gallery above to discover 24 highlight entrants into Searchlight 2014, with an exciting and talented range of artists from across the country!

Briefly, my criteria for my choices include:

• Great songs, first and foremost
• A good story
• A clear, crisp artist photo is a big bonus
• A concise bio is also a big bonus

I tend to avoid any songs that say "rough demo" or "not for airplay." Put your best song forward and make sure it's ready to go!

I started voting for six different artists across various regions, and only three have passed on to the second round. And, oddly enough, all three of them are in Grant's picks.

Crissi Cochrane - and not just because she used to be on the blog; I legitimately dig her new album. It makes me want to drink whiskey in a dark club while wearing a suit.

Wil - he actually wrote a blog post the other day about why a "veteran" like him is in Searchlight, basically saying a lot of stuff Grant has already said

Chersea - I'm sure my not being able to shut up about her doesn't have that much to do with her making it into this round, I'm sure it's because she's awesome... but I'll still take credit for it.

There are a couple others in Vancouver, like The Ruffled Feathers, that I am pulling for as well. But the minute that all of the above are out is probably the minute I lose interest in the whole thing. Heh.

This is my first day back at my job. My son Vallen Robert Neve was born last Thursday at 5:35 am.

My wife Jill is at home with our baby, while I'm here at work.

It does feel great to have my chair, desk, workstation... and my music(!), but on not a ton of sleep my brain is a bit foggy.

I'm so happy to have my music today.... although I've played Count Basie, Ben Harper, Metric, Arcade Fire, Hey Rosetta and Cole Porter for Vallen, he prefers Baby Einstein and I'm going to go nuts! He does like Cole Porter though. Any recommendations for good baby music.

There little reason to how that voting shook out. The bands that filled clubs here are gone, yet a mom and pop that makes basement music in Buckshit Narrows Manitoba is through. I can really get behind ATLAAS, the new project of a great guy, and rhyanna(sp?) who is a friend of my daughter in law. There's a good jazz outfit, too.

Hi Blog, hi Grant.

I heard Del Barber on Tuesday night, and he was terrific. He played to a mostly empty room at 10 PM, but thanks to @HedgehogFriend I knew he was coming through town and so I went to hear him. I loved his rich storytelling that came along with each song, and noted how his songwriting comes from his touring to so many far-flung places where he meets so many people who become indelible characters in his songs (waitresses at 3 AM coffee shops; hardware store clerks, motel desk clerks, etc.)

@Grant - Yup, Vallen, like Allen or Alan with a V.

The story: my wife and I were up on Hadaii Gwaii when we found out we were expecting a baby. We wanted a name that would evoke the forests and nature up there, but I didn't want a name like Sequoia or Spruce.

I'm German so I was thinking Wald, which is Forest in German. My wife and I like French culture though, so I thought of Vert (green).

Finally, I also wanted a music name, but not a name like Treble Clef (?I don’t know?). I realized that with my last name, a V name would have a musical cadence, so I made up Vallen…Totally made it up.

It was  risk to choose that name and not everyone is a fan right away, but he’s totally Vallen. He heard us say it so much in the womb, he smiles when we say his name! Plus, if people don't like his name, Val Kilmer will come over and punch them in the face!

I'm stoked to hear Welcome! I've been looking forward to this moment! I bought a copy of Seeds for my family at Christmas... this is the best song to get through the feelings and emotions of expecting a baby.. it is uncanny. Now that Vallen is kicking, the song is still potent... I think of it everyday. It might be Vallen's first official lullaby (we already call it his these song)!

CMac is dating Tre Li now???? holy moly.

I had no idea the CBC was in as deep as it is after reading a couple articles last night (one from the Globe and one from Huff Post)

As long as they don't end up going NPR style we should be good. I don't think that model would work in Canada as it relies on personal donations and while Canadians are generous to help out our friends and neighbours I just don't think we're rich enough to keep a broadcaster a float based on donations. Hopefully we figure out a way to have a public broadcaster... it is just going to look A LOT different than the CBC we know. Which could be a good thing.

I think people blaming it (and everything that is "right wing" and "oil", etc) on Harper is amateur hour and not getting you anywhere. One man is not the root of Canada's problems.

The saddest thing about it all is Hockey Night In Canada is all but toasted now, it had a great 60+ year run I guess. RIP HNIC

The Root of Canada's problem is its election system for sure but we also have a citizenry that seems to think political engagement should be a once every 4+ years. They "Rock the vote" and get all proud of themselves and then shrug when a government starts cutting major social programs... when a governement does things like our federal conservatives do or our BC liberals do they would take to the streets and stay there until something changes.   We don't seem to think politcal egnagement goes much furhter then the polls and those that do act out get ripped apart in the medial and by the police.  --- okay... that aws my rant. @ Grant - It must always be tough for you as a long time CBC employee to learn of the cuts and job losses, some of whom are friends. My thoughts are with you. I think as Canadians we really need to take a long look inward and decide what it is that we truly value. I believe we can take some lessons from the people of Quebec who have been staunch defenders of the unique aspects of their culture. If we are happy to consign ourselves to be a pale imitation of American culture in the name of private enterprise, then so be it. If not then we need to make our voices be heard.

@Flannel Tom - when I was over in Manila, Ph, we went into a music store and I just basically bought 5-6 CDs from the "top 25" albums rack to sample the music over there.  It's not really my style either, but it makes a fun reminder of the trip.

Some people collects spoons, I try to collect music  :)

So Many things i want to comment on today.  Mostly, Grant is great.  I love CBC.  Smoking sucks, but I still do it sometimes.  Coffee is the best drink ever.

I also have a lot of political ranting I would like to do but i have no time.  I do like that most of you seem to feel the same as i do.

Later guys!!

My Early Favorite is Emma Irvine with "Don't Back Down"! This song has a great hook and once you listen to it, it will be awhile before you can get the song out of your head! Very uplifting song with an awesome message for those that feel like giving up! I never knew Emma prior to this contest and I think her song is worthy of making it to the TOP!

GRANT LAWRENCE! you have to check out "the medicine hat" from hamilton ontario. the home of the arkells. you want a cool story?? the lead singer (nabi: a solo artist who's last solo album was PRODUCED BY DANNY MICHELLE) and the guitar player are married less than a year, and he is just 20 years old. they are all grads of high schools in guelph ontario (home of hillside festival) and the core rhythm section plus keys are all humber music program students.

you cannot beat their awesome band pic: it is a wedding pic in the woods in which all the band members served as groomsmen. true starving artists, making music like a soundtrack for falling in love ... with phat rhythm and angelic leads and juicy keys and guitar. this is arcade fire meets the clash meets the hip. you have to make them a standout now.
